They're on the other side of the wormhole, in another galaxy, breathing -
She looks around at the dispersing crowd for her military commander, but her eyes stop on Major Sheppard. He nods to her, like their safe trip across the universe was a foregone conclusion, and that's what makes it real.
Maybe Sumner was right when he said, on the topic of disgraced officer John Sheppard joining the expedition:
"I know why you want him. Someone else chose the military personnel on the expedition. You want a man of your own in the ranks."
Not that Sheppard is a man of her own. In their one significant conversation, deep under Antarctic ice, he looked about five minutes from panic (it was a lot to take in, she'll grant him that) and she gushed at him about how he was just the person she needed (genetically), like they were on the world's most awkward first date. (To be fair, he's the first man who ever showed her the entire solar system before he even knew her name, but she's pretty confident that her fascination with him is professional.)
But she likes that he seems to be looking to her lead and not Colonel Sumner's. She won't let it cause problems down the road (that was Sumner's only condition, "I won't give him special treatment," and she'd never have expected otherwise), but for now, with the line to General O'Neill newly cut, it's nice to have someone in uniform looking at her like she's in charge.
She smiles back and then tears her eyes away (is it just her, or is he staring back like she's the one making this seem real to him?), because they're in an alien city and there's no way Major Sheppard can be the most interesting thing in the room.
