Why do people make such a fuss about New Year's resolutions?

Do you have one?

I think New Year's resolutions are a little like confessional for Catholics -- it's a recognized, almost publicly validated absolution of previous wrongs or shortcomings. It's a symbolic wipe of the slate that can help you move past regrets that would burden you. Everyone can do with a fresh start on things once in a while, just this is a time of year that is recognized by many as a valid point to make such decisions.

I have a gym membership I need to use again :P
