Cities had become very industrialized and tall buildings were soon part of the landscape. This created quite a fuss, as society was changing. A few people criticized modern society, some being Karl Marx, Thomas Carlyle, and Jean Jacques Rousseau.
Karl Marx believed that the weakness of society was the fact that classes existed and that a classless society will eventually be formed.
Thomas Carlyle thought that modern society isolated individuals and separated them from society.
Jean Jacques Rousseau thought that ‘man was good when in a natural state’.
Starting from Rousseau’s statement, people have become fascinated with primitive cultures. This was called primitivism. One artist that obviously supported the idea of primitivism was Paul Gauguin. The subject matter in his art usually deals with African women in nature, showing them in their ‘natural state’.
