Since the Reformation posed a threat to the church, the church obviously had to fight back in order to retain its power over the population. And so, the Counter Reformation came to be. The most feared aspect of the Counter Reformation must have been the Inquisition. You never knew who was part of it, and if you were caught bad-mouthing the church, you would be accused of heresy and punished. Lists about forbidden books have been written so the population wouldn’t be exposed to different ideas and opinions about the church.
By now people have started realizing that the church was corrupt and that living in those conditions was ridiculous.
