The wrist is still sprained. It really sucks how you want to do something as soon as it's not allowed anymore.

Title: The Gravity of Love, Part 2 (?)

Watanuki felt he had a better grasp on Yuuko’s generally odd behavior now, after working for her for several months. But she still surprised him when she caught him just as he came into work and was shedding his shoes.

“Put those back on,” she said, her voice crisp. “It’s a lovely autumn day, don’t you want to enjoy it? Soon it’ll be winter and the afternoons won’t last all that long.” She wore a long dress, patterned with autumn leaves in red and gold, and a shawl was wrapped around her shoulders. “Come on then, Watanuki! The park isn’t far from here.”

“But-I have-don’t you want dinner?”

“It can wait,” Yuuko said breezily. “We’re coming back, so you can just leave your school things here.”

“Then dinner will take twice as long!” he protested, but she just waved his concerns away and said, “Hurry, hurry!”

“For crying out loud,” Watanuki muttered, but he leaned his satchel against the wall and pulled his shoes back on. Yuuko had stopped to wait for him at the gate.

“Come on,” she said. “The park has some lovely fall leaves this year.” She set off at a brisk pace, and Watanuki stumbled after her.

“Why do we have to go out this afternoon?” he grumbled. “I have your shop to clean and dinner to make, and I do still have homework, you know!”

“I know,” she said. “But the leaves are really beautiful this year, Watanuki. You should never forget that seasons are passing and will not come again.”

He tilted his head and glanced at her. “Yes they will,” he said. “The seasons always come around, don’t they? It’s just a matter of waiting.”

“Maybe,” she said, and they walked the rest of the way to the park in near silence. Not many people were on the streets, except for the occasional housewife or children running to their cram schools. The park, when they reached it, was almost entirely empty. Yuuko did not head for the usual steel fox benches, but instead grabbed Watanuki’s arm in an iron grip and pulled him down one of the park’s walkways, strewn with fallen leaves.

“Pretty, isn’t it?” she asked.

“Yeah,” Watanuki said. “But why did you want to go out this afternoon?”

“I just felt like it,” Yuuko said. Leaves drifted off the maple trees, slow and steady, a rain of orange and red sunsets. Watanuki caught one out of the air, on a whim. It was a bright orange-gold.

Kentarou, of the Super-Fast Duklyon Bakery Delivery Service, huffed like a small child who has not gotten his way and flopped onto a chair. His partner (which he rather hoped would eventually be in more than one sense) Takeshi sighed and sat more gracefully into a chair of his own. Their business partners and sort-of bosses, Erii and Kotobuki, were still shuffling papers and muttering between themselves.

“We could really use a new generator,” Erii said. “I know there’s not much in the way of money, but….”

“I agree, Erii-san,” Kotobuki said, “but between the utilities, supplies, staff, upkeep, and damages incurred, I don’t see how we can afford a new solar generator for the ovens.”

This statement caused Erii to fasten her full glare on Kentarou and Takeshi. “If our Super-Fast delivery boys wouldn’t destroy something expensive every other delivery,” she said, “we could easily afford it.”

Takeshi shifted in his seat and Kentarou hung his head. It wasn’t their fault, as they kept explaining; their driving and flying wasn’t the issue, it was all the people that got in their way. And the trucks. And the trees. Oh, and one time there had been that puppy….

“It isn’t like we plan it, Erii,” Takeshi said, his voice restrained and reasonable. “We can’t help it if someone is heading straight for us, or jumps in the way, or something like that. We’re just…very accident prone.”

“And we’ve been breaking even,” Kentarou pointed out. “We manage to pay everything off.”

“Luckily,” Erii snapped. “Anyway, I didn’t call this meeting to bawl the two of you out, though you deserve it.” She ignored Kentarou’s well-crafted puppy-dog eyes and fished out a roll of paper. She spread it out on the table. “Look at this.”

They all leaned close. “Piffle Company holding a Dragonfly race,” Kentarou said. “So?”

Erii smacked the back of his head. “Read it all, you idiot!” she growled. Kotobuki finished all the fine print first.

“The legendary battery!” he cried. “That’s the prize! If we could get that-“

“We wouldn’t need money for a new generator!” Takeshi grinned. “That would be great!”

“Takeshi and I have Dragonflies,” Kentarou said, rubbing the back of his head. “And we’re excellent fliers.”

“I’ve got one I’ve been fixing up,” Erii said. “If the three of us enter, there’s a good chance we’ll grab it! And then we won’t have to worry about extra money.”

“And Duklyon Bakery can continue churning out delicious sweets,” Kotobuki said, rolling the poster up. “Since the race is so dangerous, there’s a high entrance fee, but….”

“We’ll pull it together,” Erii said. “That battery could power the ovens, the lights, the refrigerators, and the whole block of shops with energy to spare! We wouldn’t have to worry about an electric bill at all!”
