HANG OUT AT DAD'S DAY
It was Tuesday, what his moms liked to call Date Day, but what Gus liked to call Hang Out At Dad's Day. Jenny always went over to Debbie's after school, and Gus got to visit Dad at work, and then go home with him until his moms picked him up at around eight.
It was five, and today Gus and his friend Matt had both shown up at Kinnetik, so Dad had gone home early. They'd been playing video games for two hours, and practiced the self-defense stuff that they'd learned in school that day, for a half-hour before that. Now Gus was bored.
"Dad, can you take Matt and me over to Michael's store?" Gus' socks were dirty, but he tapped them on the floor all the same. Matt picked that moment to wrestle the video game controller away from him with a triumphant, 'ha!' "Dad?"
"I've got some work to do. Ask me again in a half-hour." Dad was always working. It wasn't fair that he spent more time with his papers than with Gus when he was there, but the last time Gus had mentioned that, Dad had sat him down and given him the 'You know what else isn't fair?' talk. Dad wasn't really the type to give that kind of talk, usually, so Gus decided not to say anything this time.
"Your dad's always working," Matt said.
Gus snagged the controller back from him after he crashed his car into a median and flipped it. "Yeah, I know. That's why he's got buttloads of money."
Justin came in a couple minutes later. "Hey, guys," he said. "I brought soda and chips. Want some?" He walked over to Dad and they kissed for awhile.
"Do they have to do that?" Matt looked kinda sick.
Gus frowned. "You don't mind when my moms do it."
"Yeah," Matt said. "But they're two chicks."
Gus punched him in the arm.
"Ow!" Matt rubbed the spot that Gus had hit. "That hurt, you jerk!" He swiped the controller.
Gus went to get a can of soda for each of them. He looked over at Justin and Dad while he was digging through the bag Justin brought. They were still kissing, but now Justin was sitting in Dad's lap. Gus thought that Dad might be taking them over to Michael's a little later than he told them he would.
In twenty minutes, Dad was back at his desk with kinda wet hair, shutting down his computer. "Get your coats and turn off the TV," he said.
Gus got his jacket on and tossed Matt's over to him. He toed on his sneakers and bent down to tie them.
"Where are you guys going?" Justin asked. He walked out of the bathroom. His hair was wet, too.
Matt looked at him funny, so Gus answered. "We're going over to the comic store."
"Oh, good, now I can stay in and work on my painting. Can you guys give something to Michael for me?" Justin ran off to his corner, next to the kitchen to get whatever it was.
"His hair is wet," Matt whispered.
Gus glanced at him. "So?"
"So your dad's hair is wet, too. They were doing it."
"Probably." Gus shrugged. "At least they did it in the shower where we couldn't hear them. One time when I was little, I walked in on them while they were in bed together. I thought they were wrestling."
Sometimes, when Matt came over, Gus could tell that Matt's mom and dad had been talking to him again about how bad Gus' parents were. Then Matt had met Gus' moms, and Dad and Justin, and when Matt's parents picked him up, he told them he thought it was cool that Gus got to have so many parents. After that, Matt had been Gus' best friend.
Matt got really quiet today, when he mentioned Dad and Justin doing it. "Your mom and dad yelled at you again last night, didn't they?"
Matt nodded. "Sometimes I think if I pretend to believe them, it'll be okay. But it's kinda hard to stop pretending."
"You like my dad, right?" Gus asked.
"Yeah," Matt said. "And I like Justin, too. But Mom and Dad don't believe me when I say that they're really cool, and I like hanging out with them. They think that I'm gonna... get it from them."
"Get what?" Gus asked. It wasn't like Dad and Justin were sick or anything.
Dad walked up and swung an arm around Matt's shoulder. "They're afraid that we'll turn your friend, here, gay," he said, and laughed. "Don't worry. You're a little young for my tastes." He let Matt go to put on his coat.
"Your dad's weird," Matt whispered.
Dad parked a couple blocks from the store, and they started walking. It was kinda cold out, so they were going pretty fast. They stopped at a crosswalk and waited for the light to change.
"Can I get some new comics?" Gus asked. "There's a new - "
"You've got a twenty dollar limit," Dad said.
Matt felt around in his pockets for money and sighed.
The light switched, and Dad looked over at Matt. "You, too."
"Thanks, Mr. Kinney," Matt said. "I'll pay you back."
"Don't worry about it," Dad said. "I've got buttloads of money."
Gus blushed. Across the street, he heard a couple pops, like someone let off the rest of their New Years' firecrackers.
Something warm and wet splattered on Gus' face, and he grimaced and stopped walking. Matt cried out. "Aw, that's gross. Dad, do you have a Kleenex or something?"
"Gus," Matt said. His face was very white. He was holding onto his arm where Gus hit him earlier, and there was red -
"Dad?" Gus turned around very slowly. "Dad?"
Someone was screaming.
Gus wanted to cover his ears. Instead, he kept turning.
Dad was lying on the ground. He wasn't moving. "Dad," Gus said. "Dad."
But Dad just lay there, very, very still. Gus got down on his knees and shook Dad's shoulder. "Dad, come on, Dad..." His knees were wet. There was blood coming from Dad's head, and now it was on his knees. Gus' voice grew shriller. "Dad, Dad, Dad, Daddy, Daddydaddydaddy..."
Now Gus was the one screaming.
Someone's hands were on Gus, pulling him away. He fought them hard, like his teacher showed his class. "Let me go!" he shouted.
"Shh, Gus, shh..." It was Ben. His hands turned him around so he couldn't see Dad anymore.
"I wanna see him," Gus said. "Let me see him!"
Ben hugged him tight and whispered things that Gus didn't believe, like, "It'll be okay." But Gus didn't want hugs. Gus wanted Dad.
