like water for metaphor.

It's interesting how the past gets us to where we are. Every week, day, hour, minute, second constantly changing and shaping our lives before our eyes. Only most of us are barely able to recognize it. Even less able to appreciate the amazing way it changes us, even slightly.

I look at things I've written, last year, last month, last week. I look at some things and see them as stepping stones, ways to getting to where I'm sitting right now, typing this. Others I look at and realize exactly how far off I was. I'm keeping them in here, though. They might not be the perfectly placed stepping stones above the water of the pond placed so you can see the path, but they're the building stones that support those in the path. It's those mistakes, those wrong assumptions, quick judgements, moments of despair that make it possible for there even to be any stones out of the water.

Sometimes it's easy to know which experiences and choices in your life are going to be those pretty stones on the path to your enlightened new self. Othertimes, you can't even tell you're just placing those support beams for better decisions ahead. What matters, though, is not that you can differentiate between the two easily. What matters is that you're making decisions. And the more you make, I think, the easier it'll become to create those that rise above the water levels and allow you to walk on them to the next place.

To the next expanse of water, where the building begins again.
