cross posted from ditl.....
i'm crystal from seattle. for this ditl i was out in connecticut visiting my friend liza. on august 26th we decided to take a train to new york city and be tourists for the day. she did a ditl as well and at some points, one of us wasn't able to take a picture so we traded them to fill in the blank spots.
we woke up very early. the plan is to drive an hour and half to the train station in greenwich, ct and take a train to grand central terminal. this seems like a much better idea than plan A which was to drive into the city and park (yeah, we were nuts for even thinking that!)
i do the shower thing.
liza captures a wonderful picture of me brushing my teeth.
all ready to go!
i lj while waiting for liza.
and eat a banana.
and we're off!
\
feed the car.
a dark picture of liza driving.
we stuck in traffic (hey! this semi says my name!)
we stop at a rest stop to stretch our legs.
liza's in-laws lent us the gps. just in case we got lost (we didn't!)
we find the train station and a parking lot. i pay the meter. 25 cent an hour. we put in 12 quarters.
pregnant chicks pee a lot.
we bought our tickets.
and wait.
the train ride was uneventful and very packed. we were wedged in much like sardines in a can. no opportunity for photos without weirding a bunch of strangers out.
we arrive at grand central terminal.
and realize we don't even need to leave the station to catch a subway.
we see this when we get off the subway. it's a sculpture that was in the world trade center. and down to the front of the photo is an eternal flame. i thought it was nice.
i declare i'm starving and we get a pretzel. and then realize about 4 bites in that there is mold on it! i spit out what was in my mouth and throw the pretzel away. gagging.
we stood in line for tickets to the statue of liberty.
woo! we didn't get here early enough to get a ticket to actually go inside the statue but i'm cool with just seeing it up close (last time i was in new york it was snowing and they weren't letting people on the island because of ice. they also weren't even letting people go inside the statue of liberty at the time because it was shortly after the 9/11 tragedies.)
on the ferry to liberty island.
we arrive! (at this point we realize that we got in a car, drove to the train station, rode a train, hopped on a subway, and then got on a boat. 4 modes of transportation in a matter of about 3 hours!)
but what's more important than seeing the statue of liberty? eating and peeing of course! liza uses the facilities and i order fries. miss liberty won't mind if we take a little detour before visiting her!
we're finally done and proceed to be tourists. this is me and miss liberty a la myspace photo.
i took about 10 pictures similar to this. she doesn't move around much ;)
we hop on a ferry to ellis island.
and arrive.
the building is really amazing.
inside are all sorts of 3D graphs and charts about immigration. this one was my favorite.
and behind the building are walls of names of all the people who passed through ellis island. i found a few of my last name (both maiden and married) and my mom's maiden name. but i doubt any of them are related to us (the names are fairly common.)
another small lapse in photos. we got on the ferry and headed back to the mainland. this is liza, apparently deep in thought shortly after getting off the ferry.
it's hot, we're tired, hungry and have to pee again so we have lunch at tgi fridays. i ordered onion rings and mashed potatoes. strange yes. i don't care.
we wondered around a bit to find this. it's the site of the former world trade center. apparently there is a small memorial but we couldn't find it and we getting extremely frustrated and tired of walking around.
we spent a lot of time doing this.
we hopped on another subway to times square.
wondered around there for a few and headed back to grand central.
i had never seen the outside of grand central terminal because we didn't even leave the building when we go in in the morning.
we find our train and settle in. i add crystal light to my water. this is a very unattractive photo of me. thanks, liza.
and i fall asleep on the train.
we get back to the car and head home.
little bit of traffic.
liza's irritated but this traffic is nothing compared to what i get to drive to and from work in everyday at home.
we finally get home and i'm too exhausted and have a headache and feel nausous to finish taking pictures. this is me shortly before i went to bed.
