defending the "red states"

I am not going to be posting one of those "United States of Jesusland" maps. Nor reposting the e-mail I just got advocating "American Coastopia" in which the east and west coasts band together and secede, annexing Illinois and Iowa for the museums and the produce. In order to have any kind of hope at all, I have to believe that it is ignorance ( ( Read more... )

I'm here from Koaloha's journal, and I wanted to say first of all that this is a great post.

Yes, ignorance and fear can be overcome, but there needs to be something -someone- to make people stop and think. This election, we didn't have that. This election was between Bush and "Not Bush". Have you seen people prior election with signs "Vote Against Bush"? Did you think it was ridiculous that they didn't even try to sell the other candidate? There was a reason for that. Why did Illinois choose Obama over that other guy? Because Obama has a kickass platform and because he's cool. Kerry was such an obvious wannabe that he couldn't even convince some of the libral people I know to vote, and we are all sitting wondering why the conservative people wouldn't vote for him?

The democrats need a hard look in the mirror. At least the Republicans can say, "Oh, we did something these past 4 years." Forget the fact that what they did is horrible and is making the country worse, in screwed up logical sense it still overrules Democrats' inaction.

This is hard for me to write. I've tried posting something like this on my own journal, and every time, it's just too hard. I'm not trying to be negative, but I feel that we will never win until we admit some hard truths. It's easy to point fingers and say, oh, the Red staters are so blinded by the fear propaganda, but it's not like Kerry won all that many hearts. So many liberals and democrats I know were voting for Kerry with heavy hearts and the knowledge that at least it's not Bush, how can we expect the other side to swing on over?

I'm sorry again if I sounded too harsh or negative. I hope we have better candidates to pick from next election. I hope we do a better job convincing people.
