And yes, ongoing. See the thing is there’s a lot of family social stuff this time of year for us and it tends to bleed over a lot more into less a few days of holidays so much as a couple of weeks. And when we get a day spare it becomes more a case of “we’re alone! ALONE!!!!” and not wanting to do anything else. Except the damn neighbour

You'd go to the "best beach" on the island, and 5 carloads of kinfolk and casual friends converged there with, oh, a small lorry of food and drink. The resulting "event" went on for 4 hours. We couldn't easily pull our friend away from her family (she mostly lives in London where she is sane/normal...), but we bailed with the excuse of -- just Joanne and I -- visiting the small island to the north. We feared we'd be accompanied by "chaperones," a dozen or so, so we hatched the plot in secret -- and, like you, treasured a day to outrselves. But inescapably we had to return to Valletta, rejoining the ongoing festivities.
Like you, we had to return hospitality -- so we invited 7-8 to dinner in a restaurant, winding up with about 15 guests. (And, no doubt, a few cousins and the odd brother-in-law who didn't hear of it in time to join us have never got over the slight!)
