Random fact of the day: President Abraham Lincoln declared this day a national holiday in 1863, in order to remind a country divided by civil war that even in times of crisis there are things we share in common and should be grateful for.
I've been made aware lately of how blessed and lucky I am in so many ways. I'm even going to tempt fate now, and say that nothing truly traumatic has happened in my life so far.
-I grew up in a loving family - with two parents who love each other and still do, and siblings that I never had any serious fights with. They are all still alive.
-I was born into a middle-class America with working parents, and was fortunate enough that my mom could stop working to raise us kids when we were young.
-I was taught financial and moral responsibility at a young age, and given a good education with the opportunities to participate in many different activities.
-I have my health.
-I have good friends who push me to do and be better, no matter how much I fail at keeping in touch with them.
-I like to think I was born with a decent amount of intelligence and common sense.
-I am thankful that we have elected someone with a vision for this country that I can agree with, and am grateful for the optimistic hope I feel for the future in spite of current events.
-Most recently, I am thankful that I had the resources to withstand 6 months of unemployment as I moved and dithered over possible jobs. To be hired at all during this period of economic crisis is an enormous gift in and of itself, and I am grateful I had the ability to hold out for a position I wanted and not just needed. The serendipity of life still amazes me at times: that someone made the decision to leave their position and thus open it up for me, just as I made the difficult decision to turn down other offers I was less comfortable with and keep searching...it blows my mind whenever I think about it.
Happy Thanksgiving!
