If you recall the last Star Trek installment, Nero. the renegade Romulan went back in time and destroyed Vulcan an in doing so radically changed the past creating an alternate reality. As a result, all paradigms are thrown out the window and anything goes.
Re-enter Kahn.
Yep, our favorite genetically engineered egotist is back.
This movie starts off with a set-up act where Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise save a primitive alien race and violate the Prime Directive in the process. Kirk gets called on the carpet and temporarily demoted as a result.
In the meantime, Kahn (this time discovered by someone else) has been revived by Star Fleet black ops in order to develop advanced weaponry for the feared upcoming war with the Klingons. Kahn, of course has other plans and winds up killing a good number of the senior starfleet staff including Cpt Pike. Kirk goes after Kahn on orders to kill him, but is convinced by Spock that that would be immoral without a trial so Kirk alters his orders to capture and return Kahn to Earth for trial. This of course would expose the whole secret weapons development thing, so the admiral who sent Kirk after Kahn (and also headed the weapons development projects) chases the Enterprise with a secretly constructed dreadnaught with the intent to kill to preserve the secret weapons program.
Kirk and Kahn develope a temporary alliance to put a stop to their common enemy but in the end Kahn shows his true colors.
In an Oh-too-familiar scene where the fate of the Enterprise hangs in the balance, we see a nice little twist on the same scene from The Wrath of Kahn.
Ultimately I was quite please. I was never really sure that the new cast was going to be accepted and settle into the rather large shoes of their predecessors, but they do a much better job this time around than they did in the last movie and I think they will catch on quite well.
This alternate reality angle opens lots of doors to revisit all our favorite episodes with different outcomes. Bring it on.
