Movie Review: Sanctum

Feb 11, 2011 04:52

A classic survival story about a group of cavers who get trapped in an uncharted mammoth cavern when a tropical cyclone blows in and floods the entrance.  With insufficient supplies for the number of survivors, the movie takes us through a series of episodes of self sacrifice and backstabbing as the best and worst of humanity is revealed.
The main side plot is an adversarial relationship between a son and estranged father.  As the survival situation becomes more and more intense, they must come to rely on each other more and more and in doing so see a side of each other that they had been missing.
The side plot reaches its pinnacle when one sustains a critical injury and lays down his life for the other.
A good movie to see.  The story is probably not worth full price of a theater, but the underground setting is best watched from a dark theater instead of a well lighted living room.  Sometimes you just gotta splurge.
