A smackerel of something

Specifically, the first scene of one of the fics I've thought up for this here ficathon. As implied, I thought of more than one from the challenge requirements I was given, and although neither is even close to completion, :-/ I did come up with this first scene straight out of the gate, and wanted to post at least a little smackerel of something to do tide my requester over.

(Just so you know: First draft, totally unbeta-ed (not to mention untitled), subject to change in future.)
