What's in a name?

A poll and the comments about it on the journal of
goodtouch got me thinking about why I find choosing names for the characters in my stories so difficult. I absolutely hate having to choose names and when I have to do it it seems to take forever. But really why do I feel the need to choose the exact perfect name that fits the personality of the character I have in mind? Unless you go for something really out there or old fashioned does the average name really tell you much about the personality of someone, fictional or otherwise? I suppose when writing smut in particularly there are certain names that just don't have a sexy ring to them- but that has to be down to personal preference anyway.

Am I placing too much importance on the names I pick? On the one hand in reality people aren't always given a name that suits their personality, but on the other hand when writing fiction perhaps the name you pick tells the reader something about the character's personality.

Or maybe I'm approaching it arse about face- instead of starting off with the personality traits I could try starting with a name picked at random and seeing where that takes me?

I hope this posting by email works, I've been trying to post this for 3 days.

Edited to add: I'm finally able to edit my entries now so I could fix the typo's that were bugging the hell out of me lol
