Wow, I'm back. I didn't think I would actually post ever again, at least not until during school. This summer has been pretty ridiculous. As my last update said, way back on May 10th, I went to Guatemala. It was pretty much one of the coolest experiences of my entire life. After traveling from Guatemala City to Coban to Playa Grande (ironically named "big beach" since there were no beaches anywhere) and then finally to our indigenous Mayan village of CopalAA. It was a sweet village, and it was definitely a huge life change. Going from a very comfortable life in the US to a house with 3 rooms, 3 light bulbs, a bed made of wooden planks (no mattress) and spiders/cockroaches everywhere, you learn to appreciate things much more. Sleeping with no AC in 80 degree heat with obnoxious humidity every night teaches you something, that's for sure hahaha. Also, the highlight of the trip was when I almost died. We went to a neighboring village to voice our agreement with them that a hydroelectric dam should not be built near their village, causing flooding and loss of their homes. However, after some mixed information they received, they thought we were the people wanting to build the dam. They semi-believed we weren't after our 3 hour meeting (surrounded by men from the village with machetes), but they still didn't want our help. We signed an agreement that we were telling the truth and wouldn't go to the dam site. On our way out someone asked our trip leader (she's worked in Guatemala and Mexico for years) about why we had to sign it. Her response..."well, if we hadn't, they probably would have killed us." It was craziness.
Other than that, i've been hanging out with Megan a lot and working at Appleton. I just finished my 2nd summer up at Appleton, so next one is my last (gay). This coming week I'm looking forward to relaxing and sleeping in before moving back to JC next sunday. This summer has been a good one, but definitely an interesting one, also.
PS. If you're way out of the loop, I quit Meadows in June. I'm so happy to be free of that place and all the insanity. However, Erica, Sarah, and myself are going to work at the new one that is opening in 2 weeks in Huntingdon. I'm the most experienced person there, even more than the owners. I'm so pumped hahahahaha.
Later Days,
Bowser
