A Delayed Letter to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association

Dec 18, 2018 21:53

Dear Hollywood Foreign Press Association,

Hi, Greg O'Neill here.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/06/movies/golden-globe-nominations.html

I didn't get a letter to you in advance of the Golden Globes this year. So the nominations are already announced. So how about I tell you what I would have nominated if I were in the capacity to do so?

1. Alden Eirenreich, Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Emilia Clarke, Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Woody Harrelson, Best Supporting Actor, Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Donald Glover, Best Supporting Actor, Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Han Solo and Qi'ra. Trapped on a planet that is occupied by the evil galactic empire. Her an indentured servant to Paul Bettany's villain. Him an Empire infantryman in a battle to take over a planet. What possible way is there out for him but a heist? A heist of some expensive energy source. Steal the store from a convoy. Make out like bandits. Right? Not so simple. I was so drawn into the touching story of Qi-ra, who let Han Solo escape from their prison camp planet, and him so earnestly promising to come back for her. It was a dimension of Han Solo that Harrison Ford only teased in flashes. The decent do-gooder that deep down drove the freighter mercenery from his soldier of fortune status into freedom fighter against the Evil Galactic Empire... we see his humanity crystallized as the young man who will go to any lengths to save the woman he loves, even if it is not meant to be. Excellent supporting work by Donald Glover. If it weren't for the fact I had a full bladder on the afternoon I saw it with Phil Kopp at the Marcus Sycamore Cinemas in Iowa City, I'd have not wanted it to end. I'd have been happier with a longer running time. Alas, no one else agreed with me. So I am alone in my opinion.

2. Best Picture Musical or Comedy, Mamma Mia Here We Go Again
Lily James, Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again.
Best Screenplay- Ol Parker, Mamma Mia Here We Go Again
The guy who played the young Sam Carmichael- Best Supporting Actor in a Musical or Comedy
Pierce Brosnan- Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy (sorry, Sara)

I loved this movie. I loved every minute of this movie. I loved that Lily James, a bright ray of sunshine in the otherwise painfully rote heist drama Baby Driver, actually gets to carry the whole movie. And she carries it on her shoulder like it's a light sack of grains. Because everything flows. It is interesting to watch the history of Donna, Donna and the Dynamos, Donna's awkward meet cute with a young metrosexual Harry, her more come hither meet-cute with Bill, and finally the crackling fireworks love of her life meet cute with Sam the architect on the motorcycle, these events are intertwined, inextricably, with the present. Donna found the island off of Greece and decided to make it her bed and breakfast. It was a wreck, but she had a dream. Sophie had a dream of reopening it in the wake of Donna's death. And she was determined to make it a prosperous success, in the true spirit of her mom's whimsy. And this was all set against a backdrop of ABBA B-sides. Most of which have been used on Greatest Hits. Some of them deep far back, some of them in the recent past! It was exciting to hear songs that I just put on Volume 24, Volume 36, and here and there a long-lost gem from Volume 1 (When I Kissed the Teacher, My Love My Life). I was very near tears in the last scene.

3. Amy Schumer, Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, I Feel Pretty.

Amy Schumer didn't set out to make the next great comedy. But in my opinion, she hit her number. It's magic realism where the magic is existentialist- Amy's Renee Barrett works as a webpage programmer for a fashion company. She works in the basement with this schlubby guy who gets lots of great jokes. Amy Schumer shows the transition from a girl who has no real confidence about her body to a woman who believes that she is beautiful, truly beautiful, with no actual ugly duckling to swan transition. I suppose Shallow Hal could be the close comparison (watched some of that one on basic cable once, also underrated), only she discovers her true inner beauty on her own. All she had to do was hit her head to have this great awakening of self-concept and pride. So she asks out a guy. She asks for a front office receptionist position. We get to see how far she can go when she believes she's pretty. And no one else's opinion matters. Renee pulls herself up by her bootstraps. And in a sense, Amy Schumer has done the same thing in her own real life, not taking crap from anyone, least of all the bullies and trolls on social media.

Elsewhere in my top ten:

4. A Quiet Place: Best Drama, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Emily Blunt (she did get SAG nomination); John Krasinski, Best Actor in a Drama
5. The Avengers: Infinity War: Best Picture Drama
6. The Maze Runner: The Death Cure: Thomas Brodie-Sangster- The Maze Runner: The Death Cure
7. Black Panther: Best Picture Drama (hey it got it!), Best Actor Drama, Chadwick Boseman; Best Supporting Actress- Danai Gurira or Lupita N'yongo
8. Ant-Man and the Wasp- Paul Rudd, Actor in Musical or Comedy
9. Ready Player One: Original Score, uh, I guess for Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cooke, Drama
10. Uncle Drew- Shaquille O'Neal, supporting, Kyree Irving, Actor in a Musical or Comedy

Thank You!
Greg O'Neill
