Of all the people we could have picked to be president, we picked.... Donald Trump.

Democracy in action. I used to hear that word thrown around by the recess supervisor at Harding Primary in Monmouth.

I don't know if I like democracy in action if this is where it leads us.

Terrible thing to say. But I almost wish there were a way to discourage certain demographics, ones that fit the basket of deplorables criterium, from voting.

It wasn't like we didn't have any other options. Republicans also had Ted Cruz. Marco Rubio. John Kasich. Ben Carson. Jeb Bush. Carly Fiorina. Rand Paul. Scott Walker. Chris Christie. None of them I particularly like. But I think that I might have found them more tolerable than Donald Trump.

As for the Democrats, if you really didn't approve of Hillary Clinton, if she's that unpopular, as the media is so fond of pointing out, well, maybe we could have convinced Elizabeth Warren to have entered the race back in November. Even without her, there was Bernie Sanders. Martin O'Malley. Lincoln Chafee. Jim Webb.

That said, I think Hillary Clinton would have made an excellent president. She made an excellent secretary of state. She helped get reporters from the United States released from North Korean confinement, with the help of Bill. She was able to assist in the release of Chen Guangcheng from Chinese captivity. And she participated in the movement to liberate Suu Kyi from house arrest in Burma. I'm 112 pages into reading Hard Choices. It's a dense book. She made enemies in spite of her diplomatic prowess. But she had a sense of human rights about her, and it governed her thoughts and deeds.

But...Donald Trump? He's a rich business mogul! He himself said he's unpredictable! In 1999, when Pat Buchanan announced he was considering running in the Republican Primary, Donald Trump refused to support him. And you know why? He called him a Hitler lover! He called him for all intents and purposes fascist! David Duke had supported Pat Buchanan in 1992! Duke ran for governor of Louisiana with white supremacist backing.

But when David Duke suggested people get behind Donald Trump, Trump let him! He invited that demographic! He did it all for political gain! But actually, you know what? I think Trump is a little bit racist, racist enough anyways, that he is in some agreement with David Duke's ideology. So it wasn't completely mercenary. He needs someone like him who wants to make white America great again to help rally the votes of these rural Americans who don't know any better, and don't understand the consequence of sending all undocumented immigrants out of the country, building a wall that in no way can be done without U.S. tax dollars to some degree, dismantling the Affordable Care Act and getting politically cozy with Russia! They support Syria! Bashar Al-Asad is friends with Vladimir Putin! Mistake!

But we can't entirely blame Trump on this victory. It does fall on the rust belt, the men who sit on bar stools and squander their wages on copious alcohol and blame all of their life troubles on Obama and Clinton. Or the younger guys who either aren't smart enough or are just not hardworking enough to pass high school English.

Sorry. rant ended.

I wish Donald Trump the best. But he is not going to be the greatest president God has ever made for this country.
