So yesterday was UCSD's FallFest 2005. FallFest is a concert where UCSD invites a bunch of big name music groups to play. This year's "star" group was Yellow Card. The concert was awesome, but my ears are still ringing 12+ hrs later. I think I'm going to go deaf or something. Other groups that played wer DJ Quik, Nural, and DJ Dave Beza.
I seriously think we stood outside for more than an hour waiting to get in. The doors were supposed to open at 7, but they didn't really open until 7:30. We were pretty far in the front of the line, although I heard that people started lining up at 4. Crazy ass people. Anyway, the line was HELLA long after us, but it was all good because I think pretty much everyone got in.
The first person to do their thing was DJ Dave Beza. He's a UCSD alum, but he was pretty good. Next was Nural, whose music was OK, but they acted really...immaturely on stage. Or I guess they looked very amateur. Lots of head banging and random jumping from them. (Note for Thika and the other girls: the lead singer was pretty cute). Apparently they have a CD that just came out in August, so maybe some of you guys want to check it out. After that was DJ Quik, who I thought was very disappointing, but that's because I acutally thought he was a DJ and not a rapper. The background music to his rap was really good, but his lyrics were somewhat repetitive. There's only so many songs you can listen to about "pussy," "the bitches," and "a nigger" without getting totally bored. Also, he kept on asking for the music to get blasted louder in the house. Then he stopped slightly into his last song, and had to help his DJ get the music just right. Was very odd, and very unprofessional from my POV.
Then, FINALLY, was Yellow Card, who I must say stole the show. They were very professional, and it was one of those concerts were everyone gets really excited :). There was some random pit down on the floor that people were just randomly running through, but it was great. I never really listened to Yellow Card before (except for a few of their really famous songs), but I am a new fan :). I am totally in love with the band because:
1. the lyrics are original
2. the band was super awesome and featured everyone throughout the whole show (sort of like jazz band)
3. the drummer was fucking awesome (and by fucking awesome, I meant WAY better than Neale. He had a CRAZY ASS solo.)
4. all of the guys are in shape, are energetic, are above head banging, and love what they're doing
5. they interacted with the audience beyond the basic "now clap your hands" or "jump up and down;" we actually sang :), was a really cool effect.
6. they had cool special lighting (but that's not a reason to love them)
7. they played a variety of different styles, and the songs all weren't similar to each other
8. THEY HAVE AN ELECTRIC VIOLIN!!! *gasp* I like fell over and died. I am in love with the electric violin.
All in all, it was a good night even if my ears got blasted out.
The concert ended around 12 and then we walked back down to our dorm. After, I took a really long shower, and by long, I mean like 20 minutes or something like that, it was crazy. The RSO and RA on duty came in right after I had changed and was sitting in front of my comp looking not so nice. Haha. I wouldn't have minded so much except it was the really cute RA on duty. But whatever. No one is supposed to look perfect at 12:30 in the morning. Then we suite-bonded in front of the TV. Very fun. Finally went to sleep around 2. Amazingly enough, I woke up at 9 (don't worry, I convinced myself to go back to sleep).
