Hard to forgive what you can't forget.

I remember that car ride. Twelve or thirteen, something like that. I was in the front passenger seat beside you. We were listening to a song on the radio, I believe it was Smash Mouth. That one big hit they had that everyone was singing for a summer. Smiling, I was a happy pubelescent kid. What child doesn't enjoy humming along to her favorite song. You were commenting something about boys, I can't remember now.

And then there was the impact. The back of your hand connected with my face. Fresh tears spilled from eyes. It wasn't that it hurt. I just didn't understand why you had struck me. I asked. Your reply:

"You look just like your mother."

Dad, some things I can't ever forget.
