How often do we think of the words we use while we are speaking with our friends/family/co-workers/etc.? I was thinking of one of the assignments that my creative writing professor gave us on Friday: think of a word that sounds well written/spoken and a word that sounds ugly written/spoken. I was thinking of how there are some very ugly sounding words in English: cacophony, assignments. We do not speak a very pretty language here in the United States. Why do we choose to speak a language with harsh sounding words? I see now why people have problems with our language, especially those of Asian descent. A lot of our words are ugly sounding and ugly looking. Very few words sound well when spoken. I think of many words that sound well when they are spoken but they're in Spanish with the occasional word in French.
We yell at people that don't speak English to do so while they are here in the U.S. even though a lot of other countries have the language that sounds so much better to the ear. One thing I've noticed from going to other countries is that no one moans and yells at you to speak their language -- they aren't snots about it like we Americans are. Speaking the language will help you get around but there is usually someone around that speaks English that is willing to help.
