Can I just say how I adore Sam? (well, most of the time anyway)
I suspected this from very early this season - Sam wants Dean to be his conscience.
Sam trusts and choses Dean for it, because he knows he can't trust himself. Even all sentiments aside (now that he's soulless), he simply knows. How cool is that? Hey, they are soulmates and this is just logical for Dean to "share" his soul now, and for Sam to rely on it. And Sam really does, he did actually let Dean beat him unconscious in previous episode because I think he needed to feel what he couldn't as he didn't have a soul. He asked to untie him even though he could do it himself, I believe he could free himself earlier, he just agreed to everything that Dean and Cas decided to do to help him. He practically do as he's told by his brother. So yeah he put himself in Dean's hands possibly more than ever.

Nevertheless I see a huge conflict between the brothers coming, but it will take time to develop. Sam says there is no choice but to work for Crowley now. Sure there is, he just won't take it as an option. He's scared to go back to a place that even Crowley can't imagine and he doesn't have a soul to stop him from doing whatever it takes to not go back there. For now Dean is his conscience. But it's only for as long as Sam lets him be it. And we already know for sure he's stronger, he's a better hunter. And I think he's terrified, altogether makes for one determined being.
