So! Why is this here? Well...one reason is because I am easily bored and enjoy doing ridiculously long things like this. Another is because obviously, there are some aspects of Kratos' character that don't get fleshed out entirely in-game. So, this meme is here just to give you a further idea of how I interpret Kratos and let you know ahead of time what little aspects of head-canon I might insert.
Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy? Any sort of track and field athlete I think would have about the same build as Kratos: muscled but not enough to look excessively bulky. He’s 6’1” so he’s also fairly tall.
2. How old is he? Twenty-eight. Perpetually. He’s like Dorian Grey.
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch? For someone with such low self-esteem, Kratos stands incredibly straight. This is chalked up to past military training.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities? Kratos is very fit; I imagine he has a routine he goes through every day. No disabilities, per se, but (at least in my head) his senses of touch and taste are a little dull. Key Crests can’t contain everything.
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid? While in battle, Kratos moves well enough to suggest that he’s been doing his thing for a long time. Otherwise, he tends to be a little stiff - again, a result of his time in the military. Whenever he moves, it’s as if he has a purpose.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror? Kratos is attractive enough, especially with his hair cut the way it is and his build. However, he rarely recognizes/makes use of his looks, and his mood tends to dampen the effect.
7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred? Kratos is lightly tanned-at one point he was probably very pale, but the Journey of Regeneration fixed that-with no noticeable scars. There are a lot of things spandex can hide.
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style. Unlike the rest of him, Kratos’s hair is completely disorganized. Auburn/red/reddish-brown/etc. in color, it looks like he just hacks it off once in a while if it gets too long. The bangs falling over one side of his face are a fashion statement, though. Clearly.
9. What color are his eyes? Brown and otherwise unremarkable
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features? He has the Cruxis Crystal embedded on the back of his right wrist, although the actual set-up is Key Crest and then Cruxis Crystal. Most people don’t seem to notice it; Kratos prefers it that way.
11. What are his chief tension centers? Shoulders and I’d expect his head
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit? Whatever Mithos/Yuan pick out for him Kratos wears mostly cool colors, and all of his outfits are tailored as if to emphasize that he is definitely not a normal human. All outfits must also be extremely unrevealing while involving spandex in some shape or form.
13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them? It’s more that he has to wear them and therefore has no say.
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences? This is going off of the manga mostly, but Kratos will just reduce his uniform when not carrying out some mission. He likes turtlenecks, judging from all the art of him in them.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando? Briefs - at least at Landel's.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse? 2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate? Deep (I’m thinking baritone), smooth, but also sometimes so soft that you would have to really strain to hear him. Of course, he also has the Parade Ground Voice.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics? Hardly, although he does tend to enunciate every word he speaks, and does so quite formally. He also tends to address women with their appropriate title, ex. Miss Sage. (This is more of a little thing of the mun’s.) This is slowly being phased out; the only person, I believe, who will continue to be addressed by Miss ____ is Raine until further notice.
Before he became Kratos Aurion, the Seraph, though, I can see him having some kind of regional accent.
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency? Twin Worlds language and Angelic, he is fluent in both.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations? Kratos will use Angelic ironically enough more when he’s cursing. There’s something comforting about knowing that no one else can understand whose ancestry you’re questioning.
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words? Kratos will think through everything, but he has the ability to pull words out of thin air when he needs to.
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change? He’s eloquent enough, although Kratos uses less stylized language than most flowery speakers. He becomes especially inarticulate when under extreme stress.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart? Kratos is an intellectual with so much street/life experience that he’s overqualified in both areas of intelligence.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate? It depends. In battle, obviously he’s thinking fast. Anywhere else, he’ll take his sweet time.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical? Logic and practicality win out, as does experience. Kratos also tends to look at things very fatalistically.
4. What kind of education has the character had? Typical schooling for nobles, I’d imagine. And then he just teaches himself everything else.
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about? It’s unknown how much expertise Kratos has, but given the amount of time he had to himself, I’d say he knows something about everything; he just hides it or writes himself off as unqualified. This is in academic matters only, of course.
He wants to know more about Lloyd.
6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert? Introvert to the extreme.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven? 8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic? Kratos is very even and calm, and also generally melancholy, although he hides this like everything else. It makes him seem overtly serious.
With new people, Kratos will still maintain his calm, although he will be a little stiff. With new situations, Kratos will express caution more than anything else.
9. Is he more likely to act, or to react? React 99.9% of the time.
10. Which is his default: fight or flight? Fight
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks? Almost entirely gallows-and almost entirely non-existent as well.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them? Maybe depression? He ignores it/hides it.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
1. Accompanying Mithos
2. His 4000+ tenure in Cruxis
3. Meeting, marrying, and later killing Anna
4. Getting the stuffing knocked out of him by Lloyd
14. What does he fear? What Kratos fears most is losing those few things precious to him, especially his family. As his own life is relatively worthless in his eyes, without those precious things, he would be compelled to end his existence once and for all.
15. What are his hopes or aspirations? Kratos has always wanted to die, to finally escape from all of the mistakes he’s made and all of the crimes he’s committed. More recently and thanks to Lloyd, though, he seeks to simply atone for his deeds. To be finally absolved would be his greatest accomplishment.
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him? It’d definitely be his past. Kratos likes keeping things strictly business, and having people know about his past colors those business relationships. Of course, there are some people he can’t hide his past from (Lloyd), but ultimately the less people know about and remember him, the happier Kratos will be.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents. He doesn’t remember them; they died, after all, thousands of years ago.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like? No siblings-or if he had them, they’re long dead.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand? Lloyd: the only reason why he bothers to live.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them? Noishe is probably the next closest “family member” that Kratos has. He fulfills the role of “family pet”, obviously.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet? I would say Yuan; they met four thousand years ago on opposite sides of the battlefield. And then they ended up chaperoning the Yggdrasils. Life is funny like that.
EDIT: Dawn of the New World has confirmed that Kratos and Yuan do consider each other close friends.
6. Does he have other close friends? Mithos, but only in the way that extortion victims classify their bullies as “friends”.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people? Kratos works best by himself. He doesn't have trouble getting along with people (He has the patience of a thousand Buddhas, I'm serious.), but his tendency to bottle up his emotions makes him hard to approach.
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends? Family, I guess. Basically, anyone who is not him.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once? Widowed, but I get the impression that he’s had relationships/flings in the far past (like...pre-Anna, and probably right at the beginning of his stint with Cruxis!far past). Tales of Fandom suggests that he once had a relationship with the princess of Tethe'alla, which says that...well, he was human.
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse? No.
NOTE: I suppose I might as well put this out somewhere. Mentor-student deals are fine, but chances are that my Kratos will not become involved in a ship. With regard to Anna, of course there would be some lingering affection - he invested a lot of himself emotionally in this woman; if she suddenly reappeared alive, I don't think Kratos (especially a human one) would be able to ignore her easily - but he'll never be truly free with his love again, as cheesy as that sounds. There would be just too much guilt and regret associated with her - the whole gamut of negativity, actually - for him to be able to move on from or restart with her of his own will.
Just my personal opinion, but yeah. That's what's goin' down.
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest? First crush: probably some village girl. Latest: none
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner? Absolutely nothing. It’s more like he happens to qualify for what she’s looking for, and then she’s willful enough to get him to commit.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any? Kratos’s relationship with Lloyd is…complex. On one hand he’s betrayed and nearly killed him. On the other, he loves him as fiercely as any father. What has this resulted in? Massive guilt.
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies? Grand Desian Cardinal Kvar is potentially the number one on Kratos’s Hate List (that isn’t himself).
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the
Kinsey scale? It’s canon fact that Kratos is at least heterosexual. I’d tentatively put him as a 1.
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him? Sex to him is something not to be taken casually, meaning when he engages in it (which is rarely), it’s significant. He doesn’t think about it often, though.
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits? I have no idea what might turn him on. His sense of touch is limited, so it’d have to be something he could either smell, hear, or see. I’m banking on smell.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (
zodiac of
choice) sign? How well does he fit type? No birthday listed D:
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life? Going by today’s standards, Kratos is probably an agnostic. While he doesn’t hold any major spiritual beliefs (Being one of the key figures in an entirely fake religion can do that.), he does strongly believe in fate and other forces outside of mortal control.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it? Kratos has an extreme sense of loyalty, shown by his devotion to Mithos despite the obvious signs that the kid was snapped. To make him compromise any sort of belief, my guess is it would take some serious trauma.
4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent? Entirely indifferent, except if you believe in Martel. Then he would just be sad.
5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them? No prejudices. None at all.
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt? Kratos doesn’t think at all about money. I would say he’s well-off.
2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him? If you go by Tales of Fandom canon, Kratos was once a well-known knight and probably a hero of Tethe’alla. Since then, he’s become an important figure in an organization that to him seems to be bent on destroying the world. Yeah.
3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others? Of course he has his room on Derris-Kharlan, which is probably akin to the most spartan luxury hotel suite you’ll ever see.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on? idk books? Kratos doesn’t like buying things outside of necessities.
5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else? Kratos’s job is officially mercenary, and he is extremely good at it. I wouldn’t say he enjoys it (He doesn’t enjoy much anyway.), but it’s a decent job and he sticks with it.
6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time? ANGSTING Kratos spends his free time polishing his swordplay. No sexual connotations meant.
7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods? He eats only to keep up appearances, really, although he probably requires a small meal once in a blue moon. The one food he will never touch is the tomato.
At Landel's, because Kratos is used to rarely eating, he tends to eat very sparsely - that is, he'll tend to eat smaller portions, lighter foods, and drink just water. This is the way that I've accounted for his sudden shift in physiology, since it wouldn't make sense for Kratos to suddenly eat like an actual, you know, fully grown male.
As of 2/20/11, he's been at Landel's for a month, so I would guess that he's slowly rediscovering his appetite, mostly because he's starting to realize that in order to keep up his energy, he does need to eat. This is reflected in a greater amount of carbs being consumed.
Associations Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his favorite:
1. Color? Navy
2. Smell? Anna-smell
3. Time of day? Dusk
4. Season? Winter
5. Book? The Divine Comedy
6. Music? Tchaikovsky because of the ANGST
7. Place? the Sierra Nevada
8. Substance? Mercury (idk)
9. Plant? Oak tree
10. Animal? Greyhound
