Character name: Ryoji Mochizuki
Fandom: Persona 3 Portable
Timeline: Endgame
Age: 17
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: On the surface Ryoji is a regular high school student who possesses an infamous charm with the ladies. In reality, Ryoji is the anthropomorphic personification of Death, and plays the role as the avatar of Nyx, a being who is repeatedly referenced as the personification of death itself. He is the Appriser of Nyx, and is destined to be a harbinger of the Fall, a cataclysmic event that marks the day when Nyx would descend upon the world and destroy humanity.
The abilities that Ryoji possesses in his true form are never fully elaborated, so some of this is head-canon or taken from the Persona Thanatos, an entity in the game that this form closely resembles. In his true form, he is able to use strong abilities, the most notable being Megidolaon (a high-damaging, non-elemental spell), Tempest Slash (a multi-hit slash attack he performs with his sword), Maragidyne (A multi-target fire spell) Mudoon (an instant-knock-out spell using Darkness) and Hamaon (The same as Mudoon, but with Light). He also has increased speed and strength, but doesn’t normally hold back in a fight. He will try to deter people from fighting him in this form because once he gets going he is merciless and fierce, caring little for the wounds he sustains while causing massive damage to his opponents.
On the day of the Fall, Ryoji is able to become an avatar of Nyx, depicted as a giant, humanoid figure with four black wings, a crude crown on its head, and wielding a massive sword (reference can be found
here). In this form, Ryoji can shift between different Arcana (the Arcana being Fool, Magician, Priestess, Empress, Emperor, Hierophant, Lovers, Chariot, Justice, Hermit, Fortune, Strength, and Hanged Man) to obtain different abilities, each becoming more powerful before shifting to his true Arcana, Death. When settled on the Death Arcana, he can use powerful attacks and spells, his two most notable being Moonless Gown (which nullifies and reflects any attack cast on him) and Night Queen (a powerful spell that causes heavy damage and inflicts a negative status effect, like charm/poison/fear/etc.) Of course, this form is only available to him on the advent of the Fall, so as long as that day doesn’t come, residents of the Thor shouldn’t have to worry.
How would they use their abilities?: In regards to his true form, Ryoji tries very hard not to use them at all. He does not embrace this power, instead seeing it as something he must possess and is burdened by. Of course, when engaged in a hostile situation Ryoji won’t hesitate to call upon these powers if he must do so to fend off his attacker. In regards to his power as the Avatar of Nyx, these abilities aren’t normally accessible to him unless specific requirements are made. As such, this form won’t be seen often, if at all.
Appearance: In his human form, Ryoji stands at roughly 5’7”, standing short and more on the skinny side. He has a pale complexion, and his eyes are a pale blue. His hair is black and often slicked back, and a small black mole can be seen beneath his left eye. Ryoji dresses simply, yet carries himself with confidence. He wears a white button-up shirt, the cuffs of the sleeves rolled halfway up his forearms. On his left arm is a criss-crossing wristband. A pair of black suspenders holds up his black dress pants, and his shoes are sleek and black. His distinguishing piece of clothing is a bright yellow scarf bordered with black that he always wears, even indoors.
Ryoji’s true form is the anthropomorphic personification of Death. In this form, he stands over seven feet tall, dressed in a black cloak, white gloves and knee-high boots, and wearing a cold, metal mask with empty eyes and razor-sharp teeth. A long, thin sword is kept in a brown sheath on his side, attached to a brown belt that has a gold emblem with a design of a skull on it. Eight floating black coffins are chained to his back, each depicting a white engraving of a winged figure holding a sword over their chest. The coffins are attached to thick metal anchors attached to his back and shoulder.

http://images.wikia.com/megamitensei/images/f/fd/P3-Death.jpg Background/Personality: Ryoji appears at Gekkoukan High School on November 9th as a transfer student. He claims that he comes from a rich family who are working overseas. Because of his flirtatious personality, it doesn’t take him long to win almost all the hearts of the girls in his class with his charm. His first attempt at flirting was with Aegis, an anti-Shadow android who accompanies the main cast to school in case of an attack by Shadows (creatures who prey on the human psyche). She immediately becomes hostile to Ryoji, claiming that he is dangerous and warning the Protagonist (Referred to as Minato for the male MC and Minako for the female MC) to stay away. Though shocked by the harshness, Ryoji brushes off her comment. He later befriends Junpei Iori, one of the main characters, and through him becomes friends with the other members of S.E.E.S. (the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad, a club who dedicates their time to fighting Shadows and of whom the main characters are members). He takes a liking to both the Protagonist and to Junpei, the latter of which he often exposes a mischievous side to. This is most noticed when he and Junpei sneak into the hot springs during the class trip to Kyoto to peek in on the girls, using the excuse that they ‘mistook’ the time.
In the game, you are given the option of choosing between a male and a female protagonist. The story itself is the same, but with a few gameplay differences, such as the Social links (which are relationships you can develop to help you gain stronger Personas of certain Arcana). If the female protagonist's route is chosen, then Ryoji becomes a Social Link that you can choose to develop. During this relationship, Ryoji begins as he normally is with all the other girls; warm, friendly, and charming. As the two spend more time together, different aspects of Ryoji's personality come to the surface, such as an almost uncharacteristical solemn side. The more they spend time together, the closer Ryoji comes to the Protagonist. He considers her as a precious person to him, and develops deep romantic feelings for her. Despite these feelings, Ryoji is strangely saddened whenever he's with her. Several times he states that there's something about the protagonist that makes him feel as though he has met her before, and that if she is with him he will only make her sad. He feels theirs is 'a forbidden love,' though he can't quite put his finger on why that is.
Later on, Aegis’ memories that had been previously trapped within her circuits are restored, and she remembers exactly why she considered Ryoji so dangerous. She confronts him, whereupon he suddenly remembers his past and who he truly was; the anthropomorphic personification of Death. Originally a mere Shadow, he was awakened by an experiment ten years ago, during which twelve Shadows of different Arcana were gathered and their powers drew him out of hibernation. Because he was incomplete, he was defeated and sealed within the body of the Protagonist by Aegis, and the twelve Shadows scattered and became dormant. When the Protagonist returned to Iwatodai, Ryoji awoke within him as the amnesiatic identity known as Pharos. As each Shadow was defeated, they reunited in Pharos and allowed him to become whole, and to become a separate entity from the Protagonist: Ryoji.
Having remembered his true self, Ryoji easily defeats and heavily wounds Aegis before passing out. When he is questioned by S.E.E.S. the next day, he explains to them how he is the ‘Appriser’ of Nyx and the harbinger of the Fall. However, because of the humanity given to him by the Protagonist, he feels immense guilt and anguish over his destiny. Thus Ryoji offers S.E.E.S. an alternative to fighting Nyx: Killing Ryoji would result in erasure of the memories of their battles, and let the members of S.E.E.S live their lives as a normal student until the arrival of Nyx.
Much to Ryoji’s dismay, the members of S.E.E.S. decide not to kill him and to face Nyx. Disheartened by their choice, he then gives the female protagonist a ring as remembrance of his time on Earth as a human. He says that if she holds onto the ring, then he will be able to withstand the heartache he feels. He then gives the other members of S.E.E.S. information on where and when to fight Nyx: January 31st, at the top of Tartarus. After giving them the information, Ryoji leaves, but not before wishing the group “best wishes in the next year,” presumably hoping that S.E.E.S. does succeed in stopping Nyx.
Ryoji reappears on January 31st at the top of Tartarus, where he appears as the Nyx Avatar. A fierce opponent, it takes all of S.E.E.S’ strength to fight through each Arcana shift he goes through and finally defeat him. At the end of the battle, Ryoji laments that if more people were like S.E.E.S., then perhaps the Fall could have been prevented. He then shrugs off the damage he has sustained and continues his summoning of Nyx as if undeterred. It is only through the power of the Protagonist that Nyx is finally stopped, as the Protagonist uses the power of the World Arcana to perform the Great Seal, effectively sealing Nyx away and preventing the Fall.
Ryoji is heard one last time, though only his voice is heard. While the other members of S.E.E.S. call out to their fallen Protagonist, Ryoji tells them not to be worried. He explains that Death will sleep once again, and that normalcy will return to the world. Ryoji says that the Protagonist found the answer to life’s greatest question, and that peace will be restored to the world. Then, wishing to meet again someday, his voice fades away.
Have you read up on how the game works?: Yes. The guide plug-in is called the FlamingFerret, and you can earn money through a Mission/Job, Freelance, or Mooching.
1st person sample: [The Guide opens rather unexpectedly, and you see a tired face of a particularly old-looking Vogon. It looks like he’s in the middle of explaining how the Guide works.]
-and this is how you record and broadcast. The rest should be self-explanatory. Noe please wait here while I get you your forms.
[The picture is turned abruptly, and now the feed comes face to face with a rather charming looking teenager, with jet black hair and pale blue eyes. He’s wearing a white shirt and a bright yellow scarf around his neck, and is looking at the Guide with utter bewilderment.]
Wow… this thing is amazing! I’ve never seen anything like it before!
[Well, someone seems to be taking the destruction of the world fairly well. And it looks like he assumes the Guide is off, because he turns to watch all the other New Arrivals.]
Well, it’s not too bad. Looks like there are some really pretty girls around here…
Ah, sir, here is your paperwork.
[The voice from off screen sounds like the Vogon from before, followed by the sound of a small pile of paper being placed on the desk. The boy turns, and his expression immediately changes from intrigue and awe to utter disbelief.]
Y-You mean I have to fill out ALL of those?!
[The Guide remains on for a few more moments before the feed idles out.]
3rd person sample: Ryoji didn’t expect to be in her room under circumstances like these. Nor did he ever dream that he would have to confront her on such a perilous decision that could mean the difference between life and death. His eyes scanned over the familiar features of her room; the small TV in the corner, the desk stacked with textbooks and notes, the pink checkered comforter that covered her bed. He had been in here before with her, and even then the feeling had been bittersweet. It brought him both pain and joy to remember her warm embrace, her touch, her voice… never before had Ryoji been more happy with anyone, nor more saddened by the close bond they had formed. She was someone he cared deeply for, and yet he had felt as if his feelings for her signalled him breaking some kind of taboo.
At the time, he didn’t understand that feeling, but now things were different. They both knew what he was, what he would become. He would be responsible for her world to be torn apart. His actions, his very existence, signalled how little time she had left to live before the Fall would come and destroy all humanity.
He didn’t want her to live in fear of that death. Perhaps it was that yearning to protect her that spurred the alternative Ryoji had given them; if they killed him, he could erase their memories so that they could live in peace until the Fall. He couldn’t bear to see her suffer any more. And yet…
“…Don’t tell me you’ve all decided to let me live.”
Over and over he begged her, saying how Nyx could not be defeated, how she could become a regular high school student again. He couldn’t bear seeing her suffer any more, and he pleaded with her to kill him. When she refused, he could only show her his true form-proof that he was not human, that killing him wouldn’t bother him-to try and sway her again. But still, she refused. Her resolve was stronger than steel.
Time seemed to slow as the realization that she would not reconsider sunk in, and a deep sadness filled Ryoji’s heart. As regrettable as it was, this was her decision. He reverted back into his human form, defeated. Still, something in his heart told him that this was the decision he should have expected from her. She was the kind of person who wouldn’t turn and run at hardship, even if it meant facing Death itself. If she wanted to fight, he wouldn’t stop her.
And so, before returning back to the lounge and the others awaiting them, he slipped off a ring from his hand and gave it to her. If she could keep his one treasure safe, and remember the time they spent together, than that would give him the strength to play his own part in this cruel twist of fate. He knew they would meet again as enemies, but he wanted to be remembered not as the Avatar of Nyx, but as Ryoji Mochizuki. He wanted her to be left with something happy and precious in the darkness he would be forced to cast, so that she would fulfil later the act she could not do now.
They embraced one last time. The words, painful as they were to say, slipped past his lips;
“Minako… I love you…”
When they would meet again, he knew he wouldn’t hold back. And he prayed she wouldn’t either.
