What goes in the kinkmeme... anonymous February 27 2010, 01:11:05 UTC
What do people think should go into the kinkmeme, what are their preferences? Have there been times when an author/prompter has crossed the line for you? Given that I think most people are very broadly accepting anyway, I'm curious as to see if there are limits, even if it's on a very personal, 'I usually keep it to myself, but since you're asking,' basis. Not asking in order to set limits to the kinks, god no, just nosy ( ... )

I recall a similar discussion on...KM2, I think, where the general consensus was this: The KM is so great because we don't discriminate against certain prompts, even if they're not specifically "kinks". I mean, just think of all the great fics we wouldn't have if we'd made this place kink only! No Swords and Sorcery, not Cats of NY, no HS AU, no Brushstrokes, no Cowboy Verse...the list goes on. Watchmen is the first KM I've ever participated in, and I know for a fact that I wouldn't still be in this fandom today if this place weren't so freaking great.

As for prompts that squick me: my years in anime fandoms have pretty much desensitized me to even the most obscene spectacles the mind can conjure. There are certainly prompts I don't prefer-- I'm not a huge fan of rule 63, for example, but I'll still read it, particularly if I like the author-- but nothing that outright makes me cringe ( ... )

I came across that earlier discussion too, and so far I've taken it that way and enjoyed the fics that came out of the looseness, but I began to wonder if I was making an incorrect assumption.

Maybe I focussed on squick in that initial post too much. I think there's been some disagreement a couple of weeks or so back about whether a character would be suitable for such and such a kink (sorry to be so vague, can't remember precisely now and I'm neither prompter nor prompt commentator, just an observer), and I wonder about what that suggests about where people's individual limits are--not so much what is shocking, but about what is ooc. There's also political things going on--e.g. recent pms discussion. I don't see these discussions as negative, because the debate is interesting, but it does suggest some type of boundary we have--not in a 'don't you dare prompt/write that' way, more in a 'I won't read that, myself' way.

The prompt you're referring to was a dark!Dan one a couple of pages back. I did find the debate very interesting for the reasons you described: exactly how far is too far for some people ( ... )

But the unifying factor between fills like that is that some core feature of the character's canon personality remains.

It was really interesting reading people's personal fanon in Watchdom, in this case, and thinking about where I departed and where I matched someone else. Part of the challenge I've been finding is that something written for the kinkmeme can be completely off for elsewhere. On a positive note, I think that what happens on the kinkmeme bleeds into other places, doing strange things on the whole.

But if that's true, then villainverse, which bases its entire premise on Bizarro versions of everyone, wouldn't be popular at all.

Great case! Villain!verse showcases writer's skills at doing that tricky balance, because the characters aren't reversed copies, but are twisted versions of themselves in canon.

What you said about fanon affecting our perception of the characters is so true:

I think part of the issue is that our perception of what characters are capable of is being warped by fanon. This tends to happen if you ( ... )

OMG YOU GUYS. Emma starring Adrian. He'd be the world's worst matchmaker ever.

Oh God... just replying to say please post this as a prompt. XD

One of the many things I love about this KM is how laid back most people are. For the most part, we don't step on each others' prompts or kinks, and when someone does take issue with a prompt, it's usually resolved quickly and civilly... pretty damn remarkable considering that most people post anonymously! We've got a good bunch of people here. *huggles KMers ( ... )

I'm a complete UST fiend as well, OP. Back when I first got into reading fanfic, I too would often find myself skimming over the actual sex scenes. I still do that occasionally. I think it might be because in middle and high school, I pined for the same girl for about four years. Since we're both female, the lines of 'intimacy' were blurred, as sleeping in the same bed, undressing in front of each other, holding hands, and so on are all acceptable between girlfriends. Therefore I can really identify with UST, especially in same-sex situations. (As for my story, I stopped obsessing over her by senior year. I still love her dearly, though! She's got a great boyfriend now, a mutual long-time friend, and I feel nothing but compersion for the two of them! :3 ( ... )

Ack, comment got posted before I was done typing! lol laptop.

Anyway, my phobia--yeah, it's a real phobia. I don't mean to be judgmental of people who do those things, I just can't hack being around it or having to think about it. In recent months I've tried getting drunk and then getting high in an attempt to get over my fears...People say "Hey, just try it and you'll get over it, like I did!" Didn't help at all, possibly made things worse, I don't know...Silly me. But just thinking about it makes me get upset or start to panic D: So fic that involves it to a large extent is something that I just have to skip over, even if the rest of the story is good.

I don't read fics with The Comedian too much...Rape also puts me off, I'm afraid (though not into hysterics like the above. Isn't that ridiculous?).

I used to not be into S&M, but recently I've been reading some on here lately and not minding it. Fanfic has opened my mind to the concept, though I'm not sure I'd ever try it IRL...Even if it's hot in fic, pain hurts in the real world

We all have our personal limits, nothing wrong with that, and we shouldn't have to explain it like I don't have to explain why I prefer chocolate almond to strawberry icecream (it's just better). I feel guilty sometimes about avoiding Byron/Bill fic, but I can't help it, I have too many bad personal associations with an alcoholic. Not a judgement on alcohol because I still enjoy drinking. In such instances, I take to heart the advice in the kinkmeme, 'don't like, don't read'. I very much agree with this policy :)

OT3--got it via the wonderfully twisted Ror/Laurie fics and then it made sense when I started reading ot3 fics. The OT3 makes sense, and not just in a fixit way, they complement each other so well, each person is a great foil for the other two.

I'm very similar re: intoxication. As with you it's something I'm wary of for myself, what others do is their business.

But reading about it in fanfic has been cool and illuminating, and somewhat fear-dispelling, which is the best thing.

See, now I feel all bad because I inevitably write drugs in. If my fic goes on long enough, someone will get high. Then again, I'm clinically depressed and shrooms put me right for about six weeks after the trip, so I kind of can't help but prescribe drogas to these fucked up people. Maybe I'll start actually warning for that stuff now.

Just out of curiosity, what did you try to get high on? And who with? I mean, I'm assuming you're not a fool and didn't do it with people you didn't feel safe with, or in a place that depressed you.

I pretty much second everybody's thoughts about what goes in the kink meme-- I don't mind if it's not all porny, or all plot-heavy, or all quirky AUs, I just love to see it there. The kink meme is like a box of chocolates, one where you've thrown out the little map inside supposed to tell you what each one is and you just start from the top down, and you might get hardcore sexings with a good amount of what would be considered literal kink settled snugly between an AU where everyone is a box of crayons and an introspective ficlet from the POV of Laurie's mole. I love that variety. It's freaking awesome ( ... )

I find it hard to judge anyone since I have kinks I know other people would find distasteful, and it's so easy to just ignore a prompt with something you don't like.

But, yeah, things like rape and torture are tricky. I know most people usually like those only because they lead to h/c, but I, myself, get off to the actual torture part of the fic(I like the h, not the c). I have no doubts that I have sado-masochist tendencies, and it's never that I'm completely numb to their pain, but more that I'm too aware of their pain. I like tragedy where things turn out terribly and there is no resolution, which is probably part of the reason I love Watchmen so much in the first place.
I also like controversial kinks, like xenophilia, merely because it's deemed wrong or strange to alot of people. But sometimes I forget that some people find these things offensive, so I usually don't mention them alot.

But, I guess, if it's only in fanfics, then it's better than people practicing it in real life(?)
