Part 1/?
It makes no sense. Absolutely none. His tastes have always leaned toward the statuesque, in men and women. Tall and firm with strong faces and piercing eyes; unequivocal perfection.
Ridiculous as it may be, it also cannot be denied.
Nite Owl is definitely not perfect. His body is constantly on the verge of softening, waiting for just one missed night of exercise. And he’s weak, backing out of arguments before they can escalate into anything threatening. Adrian wonders at times how he even developed an interest in vigilantism.
Maybe that’s it exactly. He likes the idea of taking care of this precariously balanced man; making sure he doesn’t slip the wrong way and protecting him. He likes the idea of the other man feeling indebted to him, submitting to his care.
This quiet lurking does not suit him. The first night was a little like hunting, almost defendable, but it’s been a week and is starting to feel humiliatingly like stalking. He is above such things, and will act accordingly tonight.
It’s always almost embarrassingly easy to catch him off guard. All the more proof that Nite Owl needs him; his current partner clearly isn’t doing the job. All this flailing is so much unnecessary violence, but Adrian only bites his lip and watches the other vigilante. It puts him on edge, as it has every night; Nite Owl seems nearly overwhelmed, managing to hold his own, but only just.
Tired of waiting, he leaps in, dispatching the criminals with economic efficiency. Nite Owl stares at him when they’re finished, clearly confused. Even with the goggles, Adrian can read shock in every line of his posture. “Uhm. Thanks.” The word has enough upward lilt in the end to almost be a question, but Adrian chooses to ignore that.
“I have a proposition for you, Nite Owl.” He says instead, taking a step forward. He is not offended when the other man backs away; it is, in fact, almost endearingly indicative of post-battle jitters.
Back literally against the wall, Nite Owl gives a little laugh, smiling weakly. “Uh…”
They’re quite close, and Adrian draws his lower lip between his teeth, amused by how nervous the other man looks. Nite Owl plays the straight man quite well, but Adrian is almost positive he’s hiding a distinct homosexual streak. Donning the tights is a clue, crude sentiment though it may be. “I think we would work well together,” he says, not letting himself to move any closer.
Alleyways are not his venue of choice; the lighting does nothing for him and the acoustics are terrible, but even in the dim light Adrian can see the blush creeping from the edges of Nite Owl’s cowl. “I, uh… you know, I already have a partner…”
“Yes.” Adrian admits, his voice lowered into an intimate whisper. “An inelegant berserker who has left you to fend for yourself this past week.”
“He’s working a lead…” the other man says. His voice stretched under discomfort. “I was the one who suggested splitting up.”
“Perhaps it would be wise,” he says, trying to keep his voice from chiding. “To try something new in the face of this… split up.”
“Er…”
Adrian allows himself one step closer, leaving scant inches between them. The low groan of one gutter-punk is like the counterpoint to Nite Owl’s syllable of insecurity. “What would it hurt to have some backup while Rorschach plays on his own? He doesn’t even have to know, if it’s his opinion you’re worried about.”
He’s surprised by how tight the other man’s lips press together, suddenly fierce and angry. Something like a scoff leaves him in a rough exhale, followed by a muttered curse. “I’m not going to go behind his back.” He says, and the blush spreads a little further as he realizes the double edge of the words. “He’s my partner. I don’t need another one.”

“I believe you should think about it,” Adrian says softly, not letting anything negative creep into his voice. “Think about all the good things we could do together.”
If possible, Nite Owl looks all the sterner, shaking his head and turning with a snap of his cape. He doesn’t bother to say no, which Adrian takes as a good sign. No isn’t an answer he’s going to accept.
Tomorrow, as Scarlett said, is another day. He’ll come around.
