He tries to follow that thread of thought. It’s something about his mother, and thinking about her is not as foul or as hateful as it usually is. There is the usual hatred, but it is muddled and faint, like the memory of the stabbing. He isn’t feeling any emotions the way he should. Rorschach should be screaming in his mind about degenerates and depravity, but instead he is only mildly disapproving. There is the sense that he shouldn’t, tempered with the knowledge that he will anyway.
Daniel shudders above him and the thought is lost, but the look on Daniel’s face more than makes up for it.
“What?” He asks.
“You,” Daniel breathes. “You’re so, so damn intense, it’s like… god, it’s amazing.” Daniel’s fingers trace his brow, trail over his cheekbone and over his lip. He reaches up and presses those fingertips to his lips, making Daniel shudder again.
“I don’t,” he starts to say and trails off. “I don’t know how-“
“It’s okay,” Daniel says. “I do.”
Walter tilts his head curiously and Daniel shivers ago, no doubt recalling all the times Rorschach and Walter have made that gesture from behind the mask.
“Done this before?”
“No. Well. I. I haven’t done it, but there were… things that I…read while I was in, uh… in college that…uh… were very…”
Walter can see the slow rise of blood through Daniel’s face. It starts at the tips of his ears and works its way down and across his cheekbones, over the bridge of his nose and down around his lips and back across the soft skin of his cheeks. He finds it far more interesting than the knowledge that Daniel used to - or perhaps still does - read pornography, although Rorschach is thoroughly scandalized.
He realizes Daniel is still talking, blushing, stuttering as he tries to explain. He puts his fingers over Daniel’s mouth and feels the heat radiating off his skin.
“Right,” Daniel says with a sheepish grin. “I’ll just… go get the stuff. You get undressed, okay?”
Walter is reluctant to let Daniel go, and the loss of his heat and his weight is almost painful. He feels too light and too cold, like he will drift away without Daniel to anchor him. To distract himself, he tries to dredge up the sensation of almost knowing from before. It dances on the edge of his fingertips, exhilarating and infuriating all at once.
It’s something about his mother, and the way Daniel makes him feel. It doesn’t make any sense - the emotions connected to them are radically different, almost perfect polar opposites.
But maybe… maybe… maybe that’s the point. He pauses with his thumbs hooked into his waistband, staring hard at the wall. Something about the thought feels right; he’s not there yet, but he feels so close…
Then Daniel steps out of the bathroom, naked as the day he was born, and his thoughts scatter like scraps of paper in the wind.
