There's a high-pitched yowl in the shadows as Janet steps out of the door, and she scowls. She hates cats, hates that superior look they always have, like they think you're better than you - even the straggly strays. Two of them, as far as she can see, arching and hissing at one another, the sound like nails on a blackboard.
It's a hot night, and Janet hears a faint voice from one of the upper windows.
"Bubastis?" it calls. "Bubastis?" Then there's an exasperated sigh, and the voice fades from hearing, muttering something about needing to bring in extra security measures.
Yeah, that's the worst thing about working at Veidt Enterprises. There are always goddamn cats hanging around the place. And the boss is such a soft touch he won't even let them put down poison. She aims a kick at the nearest one instead.
It screeches and bolts, and Janet smiles with satisfaction.
That's when she hears the growl. There are two opalescent eyes glinting at her from the shadows, and they definitely belong to something much larger than an alley cat.
She doesn't even have time to scream.
