Dan's face broke out into a grin and even Walter's face softened at the young one's exhalation. He lifted his upper hand away and under the light of the stars, a tiny dark shape could be seen crawling on his palm. Then it lit up again and the 5-year-old gave an appreciative "Oooh.."
"You want to hold it?" Dan asked quietly, not wanting to break the stillness of the night's soft luminescence. "It's okay! It just feels kind of tickly."
Obediently, Blair held out her hand, and Dan carefully tipped the insect into it. "Oh," he added, once she held it, "Put your other hand over it, so it doesn't fly away."
She looked up at that, and wonder sparkled on her face. "They fly?"
Walter then interceded. "Yes," he informed her, gesturing to the sky above. "Can you see them?"
Blair shook her head. She could see only stars. A soft burble escaped her lips as she felt the ticklish legs of the light-up bug plod across her small palm.
"Have patience," Walter consoled. "They're everywhere." His eyes fell to Dan's as the other man looked up. He sighed very quietly, watching the stars reflected in his wide eyes. "And they're beautiful." he added softly. Only Dan heard him.
"Hmmm..." Blair hummed in concentration, staring intently at the sky. "Oooh! I see them!"
Dan's smile split the night as he held out his hand again. "Wanna go catch one?"
"Yes!" she squealed, gladly letting go of the one she still held, wiping her sweaty hands on her jumper as it flitted away.
Dan took her by the hand and the two of them skipped away into the fields, followed by one very patient Walter.
It was the smaller of the two men, standing in the middle of the sky, on unpossessible ground, that felt the most thankful that night. Knowing the relatively new holiday wouldn't come until sunrise didn't diminish the peace that filled Walter's heart as he watched his partner play with this fragile young life. He closed his eyes as a breeze swept the prarie and said a short prayer to the glint of life he'd been holding in his hands this whole time.
Without reservation, he released the firefly into the dark.
