While Dan plants his fists into Adrian's face, again and again and again and again, he takes it quietly, no complaint, but he does open his mouth. "Dan," he says, "why are you so angry? I don't think it's because of New York."

And Dan, face red from tears, from cold, from emotion chokes out, "What the fuck else would I be upset, you bastard? You--you just destroyed all these people, and you don't give a--"

"No," he says, and lifts one hand, places it on his face, feeling the heat upon it. "It's something else."

Dan falters, shakes his head, begins to speak again.

Adrian tuts, softly, places the same hand on Dan's cheek. "Dan, you're trying to be more idealistic than you are. You couldn't have remained so... naive all those years as a mask. Nor could you spending all those rules without ones, uselessly watching people commit desperate crimes behind fogged windows." He doesn't smile, and the look in his eyes is enough for Dan to want to punch him again before Adrian continues to speak. He takes his hand off of Dan's cheek.

"You're simply angry about Rorschach. One man, Dan. And although I didn't want to kill him, it was a necessity, simply because he would talk. You and I both know that."

"So I'm angry about Ror--" and he hates his voice for failing him, for shuddering and trembling when he thinks about that spatter of blood on the snow, the lingering handshake that never turned into anything more, "--Rorschach. What difference does that make?"

"I can bring him back. You can bring him back. It's possible."

"You're crazy."

"Or you can go home and pick up the pieces and do absolutely nothing besides live. It is an option for you."

"Crazy," Dan repeats and turns his back to Adrian in scorn, takes Laurie, leaves.

And Adrian simply smiles and waits until they're both gone before going outside to pick up the pieces.

If he can pick up the pieces of an entire society, how difficult could a single human being be?
