Day 05 - Favourite love story in a film

Persuasion (1995)

Maybe this answer doesn't count, because it was a love story from a book way before it was a love story from a film. It is, however, one of the bext love stories I know, and the adaption of this Austen novel in 1995 told the story so well that this film is right up there for me. I'll try not to make Persuasion the answer to too many questions in this series!

Once so much to each other! Now nothing! There had been a time, when of all the large party now filling the drawing-room at Uppercross, they would have found it most difficult to cease to speak to one another... there could have been no two hearts so open, no tastes so similar, no feelings so in unison, no countenances so beloved. Now they were as strangers; nay, worse than strangers, for they could never become acquainted. It was a perpetual estrangement.
Persuasion, Chapter 8

I am mesmerised by this film because of its gritty realism. Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds are remarkable actors, who both develop their characters perfectly. What's more, they don't look like airburshed supermodels, like many other period drama characters. They look exactly like who they are supposed to be - a quiet, worn-down, "old maid" (because once upon a time, a 27 year old woman was old) and a weather beaten naval captain who has been fighting in a war. There are no bright colours in their costumes and there is no fairytale music. They are just normal people working out their very sad and difficult relationship, in the midst of all the otehr good and bad relationships among their family and friends.

Eleven out of ten for the best adpatation of the best love story!
