For example: -4+7=3 it is positive three because the seven was larger. So if the question was -7+4=-3 because the -7 was the larger number but not by value. My teacher explained to me the easiest way to think about these problems is to think of it like money. if you are in debt -7 dollars and you get paid 4 dollars then you have taken yourself out of debt by 4 dollars so you would now owe -3 dollars.
