One of my favorite times of the year is slowly coming upon us now. I truly enjoy the Fall or Autumn time of the year. The leaves changing, a crispness in the air. Everyone seems to relax a little more once the kids are in school and everyone gets back to what seems a regular pace.
But the best part of this time of the year is when toe meets leather! Yeah you know it, football! The Cougs make a trip down to good ol' Auburn, Alabama on Saturday to play the fierce War Eagles. Most people think that Auburn's mascot is a Tiger, but those that know college football or in my case have family from Alabama that the cute little guy in the Tiger costume doesn't reflect what is on the field. Yes the Cougs are probably in for a slaughter and yes Auburn is ranked in the top 10.
Being the WSU Homer I am, I will still be thinking the Cougs have a chance until they are down by two touchdowns or more. Why you ask? Let's look at the facts. Auburn hasn't faced a west coast offense since 2003 when USC came to visit and pummeled AU 23-0. They also lost the previous year at USC 24-17 and that year the Cougs beat USC. One of the only areas that Auburn does not look solid is on defense and especially their questionable secondary. Going against a pass happy, high output Cougar offense could be the ultimate test for Auburn and if they stop WSU they will prove that they are one of the best teams in the country.
The biggest question for the Cougars is one that has lingered for years now, will the defense hold up and keep them in the game? Not only will it be the deciding factor for this game but the entire season for WSU. Losing Matt Mullennix for the season at the left end position to a knee injury during camp doesn't help matters. Also having an unproven secondary that can only improve. Now it's up to Bill Doba to prove to the Cougar faithful that his defense is what got him the head coach position and it will be his defense that keeps him around.
So 4:45pm Saturday on ESPN2 I'll be waiting to see what happens. Down at the beach with my family having a great Labor Day weekend as usual.
Kathryn and I are finally moving into our place this week and we are both really looking forward to it. Hopefully we can get all moved and settled before we head off for the weekend. We'll see.
