Train whistle? There are no trains around here. Are there?
Anyway, I've got a load of darks coming out of the laundry in a few minutes, I washed a sinkload of dishes, and cooked more lima beans. I should see if I can get a pan of root vegetables roasting in the oven (it's finally cooled off enough that I can't just set them outside in the sun), and then I'll be taken care of for a few days of lunches.
On days like today, I like to take one of the laboratory hygrometers outside to measure what the temperature and humidity is. The temperature was taking too long to equilibrate (i.e., I got too hot standing around outside in my lab coat), but it stopped at around 92 degrees. Fun part was that the humidity was below 10%. Inside, we try to achieve that using sealed glove boxes with nitrogen gas flowing through. Much more expensive, but more consistently available than waiting around for a warm air front coming over from Death Valley, which is the only place I think the past three days' weather could have come from. Maybe Mercury, or possibly the sunny side of Mars.
And speaking of extraterrestrials, here are a few choice pictures of my favorite spaz:
