The US Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is a Constitutional right, WHEW.
and,
President Obama eulogizes Charleston pastor Clementa Pinckney, and closes by singing "Amazing Grace."
Here is the full version of Obama's speech, which I will watch tomorrow, because even the clip in the Guardian article brought me to tears.
I shared
this comic on Facebook today, of the Confederate Flag being lowered, and the Pride Flag being raised in its place. It's gotten me quite a few likes, but in truth the analogy makes me a little uncomfortable. We have a SCOTUS ruling, and it is monumental, and it one step. As several of my friends have said, in many states they may be able to get married now, but they'll still be fired tomorrow for being gay. Additionally, this ruling does nothing to reconcile, or even address, the centuries of white supremacy still manifestly alive and well in the US today.
That is why seeing President Obama, a biracial man, sing "Amazing Grace," a song written by a former slave-trader, to a mostly Black congregation, in honor of the nine Black people murdered last week precisely because they were Black, moved me as much as -- or more than -- today's Supreme Court decision.
It was a big day in the US. I tenderly hope we continue to step in a good direction.
