a good neighborhood

Peter and I met an acquaintance (who will hopefully become more than an acquaintance) for coffee this afternoon in Kensington Market, which is a place in Toronto for hippies, hipsters, bikers, and anyone wanting cheap empanandas or leather wrist cuffs or gemstones. It is also a great place to people-watch, and I admit my eye was often caught by passersby, as we sat on the cafe's patio.

I think Peter must've misheard me when I asked for a hot chocolate - he threaded his way through tables and minglers inside to the cafe counter - he brought me a tall coffee instead. I'm probably not going to be sleepy for a while, though it was pretty great coffee.

Speaking of Toronto neighborhoods, my friend and colleague Kathy has written a lovely blog post on our neighborhood. It was inspired by a comment by someone not from around here, who proclaimed that, now that the nice (white, middle class) families were moving in, we were finally considered a "good" place to live. Kathy offers her feelings on that subject thusly:

"This is a place to live where every day you walk alongside new and old immigrants to Canada, old and young people, broken and not-so-broken people. I pray that this part of Toronto will not change too quickly to be a 'good' place to live. Because, in my opinion, it is already a GOOD place to live."

AMEN!
