“Is It Raining in Paris”

Mar 08, 2010 07:23

Is it raining in Paris? Will it be cool in New York?
Are there signs of hurricane
Or winds across the sea
Or is our hurricane, only a summer breeze?
Farmers talk about the weather
Will there be water for their crops
Will it snow tomorrow night? Should we bundle up real tight?
Let us ask the weather satellite!

With a television camera taking pictures from the sky
The world will see what the weather's going to be
When the clouds begin to shape up
And a storm begins to brew
Our television camera will report - it
Back - to - you...

Is it raining in Paris? Will it be cool in New York?
Will it snow tomorrow night? Should we bundle up real tight?
Let us ask the weather satellite!

'Satellite Singers,' c. 1957

from "Journey to the Moon - and More About Outer Space". Lyrics by William Kay.

It's actually a very charming album, recorded before Sputnik; the songs are fun, and as accurate as the Collier's Magazine- knowledge base allowed - which is surprisingly good. "Meet Space Pilot Jones" mentions his necessarily diminutive stature; "Put a Penny on the Scale" tells of the various gravities of the planets - and the hauntingly lovely "City in Space" says, “One day there will be / A little city, in space... Friends from every great nation / Will help us build our space station - we'll be planning it, manning it soon, our City in Space...”
