Today I randomly stumbled across
an article about whales in the New York Times. (Go ahead and go look at it now, at least page one and two.) It's a fine enough article and all, but... what the heck is with the Windows Paint illustrations? I think I made exactly the same pictures in 1985 using a
Koala Pad on an Atari 800XL. (I'll admit I'm jealous that KoalaPainter didn't have a barnacled whale-skin flood fill pattern as an option. I would of used it for *everything*.)
I sincerely hope the "Ivan Chermayeff" listed as the illustration credit isn't the
Ivan Chermayeff in
this interview, who's lauded as "one of the foremost contemporary graphic artists of our time"...
No, it can't be. Not unless he accepts jobs where he's paid a flat hourly rate and all the NY Times had in their collective pockets was a roll of quarters.
My drawing skills suck and all, but if this is all it takes to be a paid illustrator clearly I'm in the wrong line of work.
