This is something I've been knocking around for a few years.  I fully realize that this would start off as a sideline business, but it has the potential to become more I think ( Read more... )

Here's something a friend of mine posted, regarding event planning:

She did conferences for her boss. One was always held at a huge Vegas center. Multimillionaires were vying for "good spots" on the floor, it was that industry's biggest annual trade show. Her boss's company, while big enough, didn't get the "star treatment" some of the others got, and it hurt at the show.

Her boss handed her the big conference, since no one else had shown real competence or organization the previous year. She started almost 10 months in advance, looking up the names of all the "little people" at this huge megaplex. She knew the names of the shift supervisors and kept a list. She chatted with them, and sent them pizzas every month. They gave her info on local shops, inexpensive site suppliers, and lots of tips on what the center did (and did NOT) provide. They advised her which spaces were bad, and pointed her to a less-expensive but better-placed space, one that was near all the outlets and phone jacks.

Her company's booth, while certainly not the largest, was one of the most popular. She arranged for a small local deli to bring them sandwiches every hour -- and they were happy for the business, unlike the center's overpriced (and overbooked) caterer. Their site had its own garbage cans, and the staff never let them get too full. A local place supplied them with extra seats and even floor-model home furniture for dirt cheap, in exchange for a small sign. Every single site staffer knew my mother's name. All she had to do was pick up a phone and things got fixed.

In short, their space was so cozy and well-catered, people would hang around and the crowd was constant. By the end of the show, my mother's company had tripled its leads and gotten twice the sales of the previous years.

In the event planning market? Bribery is trivial.

Ask yourself what staff security would be willing to do. do your services include taking care of drunken attendees? Protesters? How about handling permits and licenses?

That would all be part and parcel... I'd be looking for ex-cops and bouncers for my security pool. They're the best for that sort of thing.
