1) What is the Church doing to stop this from happening again right now? I'm very sorry that this happened to people in the past, but the very last thing I want is another generation of shattered lives. While I enjoy self-righteous wrath as much as the next person (I was voted mosst likely to lead an angry mob in high school), the focus really should be on the present and future.
2) Forget canon law and covering up. Immediately turn these cases over the the secular authorities who are better equipped to investigate and prosecute. This will have the added bonus of telling currently active pedophiles that they will no longer be protected by the Church.
3) Call a big council like Vatican Two. Throw open the windows, expose the corruption, get rid of it and find ways to prevent it from coming back. Most importantly, SHOW people what's being done. Trust us just isn't going to cut it anymore; not after this. The church broke our trust by allowing the strong to prey on the weak over and over again. The Church has to earn that trust back.
3.5) Number 3 totally depends on keeping the lawyers in check. You can bet one of the reasons the Pope is being silent is because he can see them standing like vultures on the hills of Rome, looking at the Vatican and rubbing their hands with glee as they calculate how much they stand to gain when St. Peters and all of its treasures are sold to pay legal fees.
4) Anyone who thinks this sort of abuse and coverup is limited to the Roman Catholic Church is an optimistic dreamer. I wish I could be like you.

They're everywhere and they're getting away with it because our legal system (at least the Canadian legal system) doesn't take this seriously enough.
