Gaming and concerts

Saturday was a fairly busy day. I joined a new roleplaying game, "Amber". This will be my first diceless living game. I had some vague idea of what I wanted to play, but almost no setting knowledge, so fetket tidied it up for me and linked it in with the setting. Enter Kayane, a guardian. So far there has been one joke about the Japanese guy being around school girls (thank you eurmalian). The previous Amber game lasted for 11 years, but the present one is due to last only 3-4. This isn't the longest game I've been in (5 years in craigoxbrow's Buffy game), but still pretty long, so this should be a definite commitment.

In the evening Jules, Amanda and I went to see Roger McGuinn at the Queen's Hall. He was supported by some Yorkshire singer called Edwina Hayes, who kept on talking about how she loved her miserable songs. She was pretty good, but her own songs were just as good as the ones she covered. Apparently her music will be featured in a Cameron Diaz film, My Sister's Keeper, which comes out next week.

Roger McGuinn gave an autobiography style presentation, talking about how he got into music, and which songs were important, punctuating his monologue with music. I have to admit, that I'd only heard about 1/3rd of the songs, but I still enjoyed the ones I hadn't heard before, which I think is the mark of a a good performer. The highlight was probably Eight Miles High, where he really pulled out all the stops - despite only using an acoustic 7 string guitar, he managed to fit about three different parts simultaneously. A very enjoyable evening.

Meanwhile, I gave a presentation last Thursday, which went reasonably well, and I've got another longer one down in York on Tuesday, so I'll be spending tomorrow practising it.
