I'm not really a fan of Christmas. Sure it's fun getting presents you say, but my birthday is so near to Christmas it feels like the same event (ooh, it's my birthday and Christmas).
However, that doesn't mean that this is not a time to celebrate. We're all off work, it's cold (so no hayfever), there are Christmas trees (I'm allergic to them instead), pretty lights all over the place.
But most of all it's dark. Really dark. For something like 16 hours of the day, depending on latitude. And not only that, it's the time of the year when it is most like this. We've made it this far, from here on it gets light again. Something to look forward to. New growth, another set of leaves to appear on trees, warmer weather.
Damnit, we need to celebrate because otherwise it's a pretty bloody depressing time of year.
So Merry winter solstice to you all!!

P.S. I've got to be on a ferry for 12 hours from Aberdeen to Shetland tomorrow evening, and I'm not looking forward to it one bit.
