To a Youthful Self

Jun 06, 2013 22:03

Today's question is 5 things you would say to your 16-year-old self if you could. I've always hated this sort of question. Regret is not something I handle well- the if-only, if-only nags at me. What else would you say to your 16-year-old self but something that might have changed the life you lived? A suggestion to make better choices? Encouragement to follow a dream you'd given up on? If only you'd done this, if only you'd known that... bah. I won't go there and I won't do it.

Instead I offer what six characters would have been doing when they were sixteen:

* Fractures (also known as Henry)- absolute minimum schooling, mostly working at the family mine
* Genie- college prep courses in high school at Capitol Station, flute lessons, dancing, fancy dresses
* Cypress- as much school as his station offered, hiding from from his father and uncles as often as he could
* Micky- transferred to an Earth-orbit hospital where min-g would give her mobility she lacked in gravity
* Eliza- school with her cousins, sports and field trips and family fun
* Pete- in his brother's shadow, but determined where his brother dawdled
