PBR Winston-Salem, Round 2 and Short-go
Actually being at the event in Dallas last week was absolutely awesome! I definitely want to go to more events - sadly, that's the only Texas event this season, but there'll be another Dallas event next year.
Who the hell is Skeeter Kingsolver? Ah, apparently his first event ever - no wonder I've never heard of him.
Previously: Marchi bucked off Bones in the $20,000 challenge ride that Tom Teague (Bones' owner) offered. JB Mauney, wanting a chance at Bones himself, promised that he'd choose Bones in the shortgo, but instead Teague has withdrawn Bones from today and offered JB a chance at the same challenge in two weeks in Oklahoma City. Also, Zack Brown hit the ground hard and apparently got knocked senseless and got carried out on a backboard, which was distressing. However, according to the report they got from Tandy right before the end of coverage, he's still planning to ride tonight.
Nope, apparently Zack isn't riding tonight. But he is up and there, which is good. Has a concussion. Hmm ... he's saying he landed on his elbow and jammed his shoulder into his cheek, which is what actually knocked him out. That confused me, when I saw that round earlier this afternoon, since his head didn't actually hit the ground that hard. Bummer for him - he's 5th in the standings, apparently, so it sucks that he can't ride tonight.
Another interesting thing is that Zack being fifth means Marchi isn't even in the top five - the standings currently are JB, Kody, Ryan Dirteater, Austin Meier, and Zack. Heard some speculation during the first round that he's having a sort of post-championship slump.
And on to the event. Jared Farley and Kolt Donaldson have both bucked off so far, now Chris Shivers is up. Ack, poor choice of cameras - don't pick the one Joe Baumgartner is standing right in front of, guys! And he rides, but he looks like he hurts. Hmm. He's now ridden both his bulls.
Dustin Elliott comes out and goes off almost as soon as they switch to watching him from Chris' replays. Only about 3 seconds and change, I think.
On a random note - my finger works much better now! I'm even using it to type a bit and it hurts much less. Still doesn't entirely bend far enough to type the "m" key well, sadly.
Less random note: they apparently sold out Lawrence Joel Coliseum at Wake Forest for the event. Awesome.
LJ bucked off, dammit. He's only here as an alternate, and this would be a great chance for him to earn his way back on tour.
Beau Hill's up. Hmm, is he an alternate or did he get on in the cut? wow, he apparently took three rides in round 1. And now he rode, but is up for yet another reride. But he hurts, which is not good at all. Looks like his groin's bothering him, he hobbled off. Score was only 60 points, though.
Aw, Ednei Caminhas went off. Ouch, bull's got a 75% ride percentage, too. He's only in on his past champion exemption, so he's really gotta ride, but that's apparently 11 straight for him.
Okay, Beau is taking his reride. Must not hurt too badly, then. (Admittedly, hurt for these guys doesn't seem to correspond all that closely to hurt for normal humans.)
Heh. Rusty Wallace is there. Random but interesting! (Not like Winston is all that far from Mooresville, after all.)
Cody Campbell's up. He's 7/10 on the season - made it to 6 straight, I think, maybe 7. LJ's on the chute for him, and crap. He slaps (whereby "slaps" I mean "drapes on top of the bull") at 2.6. Bummer.
Brian Canter's up - nice loud cheer for the native. Just showed Jerome Davis, who's a local and who apparently taught both Brian and JB. They're saying he does a lot to foster young riders in the state. And damn, Brian's off in 4.7. Bah. He only got an 82 yesterday, so he's only in 22nd. He's done.
Ross Coleman! He's got an 87 from yesterday. And his bull is lying down. Not that eager to go, maybe? And I think Ross just took the bull ling down, and... yay! Made the ride! Bull wants a chunk of Frank Newsom after, though.
Hey, JB's up! (The loud cheer from the crowd was a good clue.) C'mon!!! And ... yes! He's 2-2 now! Hooray for at least one of the local boys doing well! Haven't seen his score yet, but I think it'll be good. 86.25, and he's now in the lead.
And JB interview time now. He has such a big smile, it just kind of takes over his whole face. He's one I'd love to see win the title this year - him or Kody, I'd be perfectly happy with either. I'm bummed Bones got pulled out of the shortgo, though. I'd love to see that matchup.
Ryan Dirteater rides for 86.5. Good for him! It was a surprise that he's in 3rd in the world, but that big win last week got him there.
They're talking to Jerome Davis about how popular PBR is in NC, especially with JB and Brian on tour, and JB so high.
Brian Herman rode, but is getting a reride. They keep getting totally impressed with how well he's doing given his age - JW made a comment about being amazed that he's still going, when JW himself is retired at 33 and can't face riding anymore. Brian's turned down his reride. Jerome Davis is saying that he's been hurt for ten years, and Brian's the only guy left on tour who was there when Jerome was riding. Ouch - apparently Brian "feels like he pulled something in his back." Not good.
Travis Briscoe rides - that's his second ride, I think. 88.75.
Jerome's talking about how the younglings have matured now, and that's why JB's a really serious contender this year. Particularly in the emotional side.
Is that ... yup, Beau Hill and his reride. Damn, that's his fifth bull of the weekend! Way too many rerides, poor guy. Kind of like Kody last week - three rides in one round. Heh - poor Beau, he's hugely tall and always gets the tiny bulls. But he rides! And gets a decent score, 84.75, so no more rerides and he'll be back in the shortgo. Plus he's not limping this time, which is good.
And looks like it's Austin Meier's turn for his reride. But first - shortgo! Chicken on a Chain, Voodoo Child, Pandora's Box, I'm a Gangster, Deja Blu. I recognize all of those, and eye them with delight, except Deja Blu - less familiar with him. And huh - Richard Childress is sitting with Tom Teague! I do love being able to make random NASCAR sightings at PBR events. According to Jerome, a lot of the NASCAR guys love PBR. They say Bobby Labonte's there, too. Awesome!
Lied about Meier - Josh Koschel is up. And he's totally set - makes his 8 effortlessly. Good ride. His second of the weekend. Someone wake up Judge 4 ... c'mon ... Anyway, average age of the top 5 is 23 - until you take 29-year-old Zack Brown out of the equation, then it drops to 21.5. Wow.
Mike Lee's turn. Damn! off in 6.8, and bull tries to run Mike over, then knocks Frank Newsom down hard. Fortunately, both are up and unhurt.
Cody Ford, off quick, and looks like he took a hit to the head. Oh yeah, looks like he took a horn to the head. Ouch.
Josh Koschel got an 87. Thank you for finally deciding to tell me!
And now is finally Austin's reride. (I like him ever since I heard him make that comment about having to walk around nekkid if a bull ripped his pants and he didn't bring a spare.) And he rides! Jumps very neatly off onto his feet, too. They're saying that both he's working out and getting a lot more fit, and that he's rooming with Ryan Dirteater and the two of them are feeding off each other. And yeah, I can tell he's getting thinner - I remember last year he did look a little out of shape for a bull rider. (He's a stockier body type than a lot of them are already, since a lot of them are pretty small and slim.)
Robson Palermo bucks off fairly quickly. He's 0-2 this weekend. Looks like his shoulder hurts. *snort* Ty's joking that he and Jerome got sore just watching him, and that they get sore riding the elevator now.
Clayton Williams is up. And wow. Good bull! Looked like he was flying! Gets Clayton off in 3.5. And ouch - he hit his head on the bull's neck on the way down. Good thing he wears a helmet or that might've hurt.
Shane Proctor's up! He should have at least some local following, since he's married to JB's sister. And wow - that was an ugly and painful-looking dismount! Upside down and pinned briefly against the chute. Heh - the riders on the back of the chute were laughing at him.
Ah ha, yes Beau did get in because of the cut, as did Skeeter (aka Who the Hell are You?). Doesn't look like Pistol or Reese Cates were high enough in the alternates list to get back in - sorry,
featherjean. :( I'm just still being grateful that Cord didn't get cut - I pouted enough when he missed the finals. At least the Dallas event was before the cut, so we got to see everyone.
And did I just miss someone, or was that a replay of Skeeter's ride from yesterday? I suspect the latter, and I don't feel like rewinding to find out.
Moving on to Wiley Petersen! He's already got one ride, so let's see if he can get another. (If he can ever get out of the chute ...) And he finally goes, and good ride. Not an exceptionally exciting bull, but a decent one. Gets an 85. Not enough for the lead, but he should get a decent pick in the draft. (And he picks at random anyway, or picks a bull who's name he likes. So it's not like pick matters quite so much, except that he can avoid the really scary bulls.)
Sean Willingham's up. And off. I never even saw the ride! He went off in 3.3 - basically, by the time I looked up from typing his name, he was already off. He's not doing well so far this season, I think.
Matt Bohon's turn. He's already got a solid score of 88.25 from round 1. *snicker* Justin McKee's commenting that he feels really tall when he plays basketball with bull riders. And Ty's twitting him about feeling old and bald. And back to Matt. And ouch - went off real hard. Not damagingly hard, fortunately. Bull eyed a couple of bullfighters, but didn't actually do anything.
And Leah's talking to Rusty Wallace! Says his son Steven invited him and his wife to come, but he's a big fan.
Someone just rode, but I missed the name. Argh. Hopefully they'll sum up decently. Ah, Aaron Roy just made his second ride.
Ryan McConnel's turn. Wow, fast-spinning bull. Not much buck, but a hell of a lot of spin. Got the ride, though. Heh - Ty talking about race cars vs bull riding is pointing out that in a car, you can take your foot off the gas. Don't exactly have that option on a bull.
Kody! What the fuck! Off in 2.0, and he's 0-2! After going 0-2 in Dallas. Ah, apparently he's fighting the flu, and is so sick that Jerome Davis is surprised he rode at all. However, Austin Meier's 3rd in points, and he's leading the average, so Kody could lose 2nd by the end of the weekend.
Cord bucked off in 2.6. Fuck. Ugly buckoff - he almost got hung up orotherwise dropped into a bad position.
Wow, Austin's ridden his last 8. Nice.
Hey, they're in Tampa next weekend, at least if I saw that correctly as I was fast-forwarding. (I'm on a brief delay from talking to my parents.) And right, I remember noticing that now. Duh.
Hi, Bobby Labonte! They tracked him down in the stands. Cool. Just showing him.
Mike White went off before I even had a chance to look at him. He's 0-2, and bucked off quick both times. He's confusing Ty and Jerome, because he's so streaky and Jerome's concerned that he could be a world champion but he's getting old enough that he needs to do it quickly.
Valdiron's up. And goes down rapidly. 2.7. Wow. He's down to 10th in the standings, and he's 0-2 this weekend. This is a rough weekend for some of these guys.
Kasey Hayes is up. And he's the historic ride - last year, winning this event with 92 points on Camo, nice. And ... he rides! Quite well, too. 86.75. His second ride, too. Heh - Jerome's saying that the fine was the best $7500 Kasey's ever spent, because he's got a completely different atmosphere around him since then. Guess it's kind of rededicated him or something.
Renato Nunes is up. This hasn't been the best weekend for the Brazilians so far, thinking about it - Robson and Valdiron have gone off - so we'll see how Renato can do. Damn - off in 4.0. Fast, fast spinning bull - another one that was a little low bucking, but fast. Bull apparently made himself dizzy, cause he kinda half fell down right after Renato went off.
Luke Snyder's up! C'mon! Damn! Off in 6.3. Argh. I think he's 0-2 now.
Guilherme's up. Rode in Round 1, but bucked off Bones in the challenge. The commentators are impressed that Bones bucked him off going into his hand. And ... he rides! Gonna be a solid score, too. Yup, 88! That'll get him back for the shortgo. (Last time they checked, Brian Herman was sitting in 12 with two rides, and it wouldn't surprise me if no one makes it back with only one ride.)
Heh, showing Ross Coleman talk to Tom Teague with Richard Childress looking on.
Jerome's tentatively picking JB against Bones in two weeks - he thinks it'll take a lefthanded guy to ride him, and thinks that JB's got the best chance of anyone. Talking about Bones being way smart - he feels for the riders and adjusts. I love the fact that the top bulls are bright enough for that.
McKennon Wimberly bucks off in 5.7 - lost his rope.
Last ride of the longgo - Skeeter Kingsolver. He's up for the Ride with the Best, of course.
In other news - Brian Herman is not riding in the shortgo, his back is too bad. Bummer. This means there will be at least two guys back with only one ride - Kingsolver just bucked off, and he's in 15th, and whoever's in 16th will get in to make up for Brian.
And off to intermission and then the shortgo!
*giggle* They're saying that Big Bucks manages to turn the fans and lights in his barn on in the middle of the night. They're debating whether it's true or whether it's a tall tale from Tom Teague. And speaking of ... they're asking why Tom Teague pulled Bones out of the shortgo, and it sounds like because Teague wants to save him for the matchup against JB in Oklahoma City. Because JB'd already promised that he'd pick him in the shortgo.
And draft time. JB, up second, gets lots of cheers. He takes Deja Blu, who's supposed to be the highest rated bull in the round. (I'm not going to comment on all of them, just anything major. Like who gets stuck with Chicken on a Chain. Or Avalanche. Or Scene of the Crash. Or Pandora's Box. LOTS of bull power running loose.) And wow. Wiley took Scene of the Crash. Nice. 7th pick, too, hardly a lack of choices. I think Ross might have just picked Cut a Rug in order to avoid all of the others. Heh - apparently that was the bull Aaron Roy wanted, but now he's taken Chicken on a Chain, nice! Wow, Beau took Pandora's Box! Not a lot of choices, admittedly, I think he picked 10th or 11th. Bet you money Avalanche goes last, to whatever poor bastard it is who's filling Brian Herman's space. Or not, wow. Damn ballsy move for a rookie. Kingsolver just took Avalanche, so Matt Bohon gets Fire and Flame instead.
Think they were just showing Scene of the Crash and his minimal rides - including Justin and Brendon. Heh - talking to Tom Teague and apparently a couple of the guys trained him to turn the lights on. That's hysterical. He's also talking about how the top guys always pick his bulls, and it gives him an ulcer.
I do love how these guys think. Wiley picked Scene of the Crash because he's bucked off him a couple times. And he's far from the only guy who does that - Luke picked a bull in Dallas that's bucked him off three times previously (and did it one more time during that shortgo). They all keep going for the bulls that have bested them in the past! It's kind of hilarious!
*sigh* I finally caught up to live, and now I have to watch commercials. Rar.
And we're off! Shortgo time!
Matt Bohon's up first, bull has 17 straight buckoffs, and that streak just ended! He beat Fire and Flame, good for him! 88.5. That'll put him in the lead (at least for the moment, since there's 13 guys with two rides).
Skeeter Kingsolver on Avalanche is next. Avalanche is on a 27 straight buckoff streak that just went to 28, and quickly. Landed hard, too, and on his head. Jerome's predicting him to be Rookie of the Year, though. Cool.
I'm a Gangsta vs Shane Proctor. C'mon ... wow. Off in 1.6! One jump, wow. Shane's limping now - hope it's not serious. Ah, Judge 3 is offering him a reride cause the bull hit his hip on the chute.
Kasey Hayes vs Voodoo Child, off in 3. Last time Voodoo Child was ridden was Justin - for 94.5. Wow.
Pandora's Box vs Beau Hill. C'mon, Beau! I'd love to see him do well, and avoid the next cut. Cord's on the back of the chute for him. Wow, Pandora's Box is 6/62. wow. Wow!!!! I think he got there! Shit, but he hurts. He's flat, and looks dazed. *snicker* "Holy shit." Yes, this is a live event. Ooh, yeah, he hit his head on the chute as he came off, looks like. Replay judge is taking a look at the time. *crosses fingers* They got Beau on his feet fairly quickly and he walked out under his own power, btw. And he scores! At 8.0 exactly! 86.25 was his score. And he's smiling, so he doesn't hurt too bad, at least not once he realized he got a score and he's currently in the lead.
Ah, more information about next week - it's Tampa on Saturday, Tallahasee (sp) on Sunday. So kind of like Fresno and Sacramento, except one day each instead of one and two.
Yeah, I have no intention of going ANYWHERE for President's Day weekend, unless I can arrange to be at a TV at 330 CST. I am NOT missing JB vs Bones for anything. That has potential to be epic.
Aaron Roy vs Chicken on a Chain. And ... holy crap. That was quick. Just kind of flung Aaron up onto his shoulders and that was all she wrote. 3 seconds, 44.75 bull score.
Ross cvoleman vs Skyhawk Cut-a-Rug, who's unridden in 9 outs. C'mon, Ross! Damn ... make that 10 outs. 45.5 bull score, 3.2 seconds. Man, that bull leaps.
Ryan McConnell vs Nervous Waters. Let's see how this goes ... and .. he's got it! And he'll have the lead, cause he only needs an 81 to pass Beau. Got an 89, beautiful! Good ride.
Wiley vs Scene of the Crash! C'mon!!! Wow!!!! He's got it!! Beautiful! And another lead change, as Wiley barely passes Ryan with an 89. Sounds like it might have helped that Wiley rides left-handed.
Josh Koschel vs Chance, who's 9/14, so eminently rideable. Except apparently not, wow. Josh went down fast, and a 45.75 bull score. Nice.
Shane Procter's up for his reride on Sir Patrick. This is the bull that knocked out Zack Brown, and Shane goes off quickly and comes up looking not entirely healthy. He's out of the arena with the medical types and favoring his neck. Not good, I don't like that.
And now the last five are up! (I almost typed "final five" but that's got entirely different connotations.) Starting with Guilherme Marchi vs Spin Zone. And wow. He slapped at 1.8, but stayed on, so that'll be reviewed. Looked like a slap to me, but obviously he's challenging, so we'll see what the replay judge thinks. Here, replay. Ah, might have just been the side of his face, but it's hard to tell if his hand came down too. Replay judge says slap. Marchi is not happy. Bummer. And yeah, PBR replay is the same rules as every other sport with instant replay - overruling the original call requires irrefutable evidence, and there definitely wasn't any.
And moving on - Travis Briscoe vs ... c'mon, name? Someone? Anyone? Bueller? I don't really feel like rewinding and finding it. They'll tell me eventually. Red Bull. And here we go. And damn! Loses it at 7.1, so close. He's limping off, too.
Okay, up to the top 3. Chris Shivers vs California Dreaming. Marchi is still talking to the judges trying to argue his case. Chris rode this bull for 91 at the finals, so this could be real interesting. Having trouble getting the bull set properly - bull looks to be leaning pretty heavily against the side of the chute. Wow - that bull's got 640 outs, with 300-some rides. If that stat was correct - damn. Jerome says that the bull leaning could be a bad disadvantage for Chris, which is why chris is taking his time and trying to get the bull onto his feet properly. Mike White's now on the outside gate trying to get him straightened.
*snicker* Change of topic, but they showed Marchi going up to plead his case, and the replay judge pointed at his sleeve, to which Marchi nodded, gave a thumbs up, amd moved off. They're saying the judge maybe pointed out where he had bull hair on his sleeve or something. Heh.
And Chris finally gets out and rides!! Beautiful ride, 91!! Nice!
And HB goes! Against Deja Blu, and he gets it! Wow!!! Needs a 91, not sure he'll get it or not ... and he gets a 91 exactly! Fantastic ride!!! I think he's steadily moving up people's list for the world title. He and Chris are teammates, and both are on the shark cage right now.
Austin Meier is still to go. (I completely forgot JB wasn't last!) Vs High Lonesome. Needs a 90.75 to win. He's made 4 of 6 shortgos, wow. And here he goes! And ... great corrections and he makes it! Nice! Not gonna get the score he needs - 89.75, but still a great score.
Hah - JB just signed the camera lens. Nice.
And that's all she wrote! JB wins, Chris gets second, Austin gets third. Great, great event.
And now, given that it's 930 and I haven't eaten since 2, I'm going to go hunt for dinner.
