So flipping over to PBR after the excessively exciting finish to the NASCAR race, time to resume my commentary on the World Finals.
Seven guys have ridden both their bulls so far, including World #2 JB Mauney and World #3 Guilherme Marchi. World #1 Justin McBride has yet to ride. This makes me nervous - I like Justin, and I really want him to win.
*twitches* If the bonus points for finishing position at the end of the finals were awarded now, JB would win the title, with Marchi in second and Justin in 3rd. Now, there's still 6 rounds to go, counting tonight - 5 regular rounds and the shortgo - so there's lots of time for him to start riding better and fix it.
Ty Murray's reusing his Super Bowl analogy - there's a team trying to win it, and there's a team trying not to lose it. Seems like Justin's in the latter position. And JB and Marchi both look strong, and JB in particular has nothing to lose - he's only in his second year of the PBR, this is his first time challenging for the title, whereas Justin's a past champion and Marchi's finished 2nd the past two years.
Hey, time for the Battle for the Buckle matchups. I was 3 for 4 the first night, but only 1 for 4 last night, so my total score's only 4. Let's see who the matchups are tonight.
Brendon Clark vs Splat Kat. Hmm. I like Brendon, but his season's been kind of spotty and he didn't ride yesterday, nor did he ride his reride the first night. So I think I'll vote that he's due for a ride and take Brendon. Chris Shivers vs Evil Forces. Definitely taking the bull on this one - he's 0-2, and hasn't done much of anything all season. Although he is looking better lately, but Evil Forces is a good bull, I think. Renato Nunes vs Encore. Hmm, this one I'm almost at the point of choosing at random - Nunes isn't one I know as much about, but he's been good so far this finals. Think I'll take the rider on this one - Nunes is on a roll. Sean Willingham vs Crown of Thorns. Sean's 0-2 as well, and I think he's due for a ride, so I'll take him.
Matchups/Picks:
Brendon Clark vs Splat Kat: rider
Chris Shivers vs Evil Forces: bull
Renato Nunes vs Encore: rider
Sean Willingham vs Crown of Thorns: rider
They're talking to Kody Lostroh, who's the event leader. He said he's been getting on practice bulls with no spurs and doing other things to make it as difficult as possible, so that when he gets here it's easier, and it certainly looks like it's working. Both of his rides were 90.5
Ah, a thing I haven't seen before, talking to past world champions. Justin, Adriano, Michael Gaffney, Chris Shivers, and Mike Lee.
Hey, the bucking is started! Tater Porter just went off - I think he rode his first night, but he's now 1-3. Still, getting one ride is not bad for a guy with a broken arm.
Ouch! Greg Potter just got slung off pretty hard, then the bull made a run at Frank Newsom, who barely got clear. That looked rough.
Hugo Pedrero's up. They're talking about the bull competition - this is the last night of competition for the young bulls who're in the Classic competition, which is a pretty big purse for the stock contractor of the winning bull. Pedrero's the international rep from Mexico, who was 2-0. But now he's apparently been disqualified for taking too long in the chute. Ty Murray agrees that the bull looked to be set pretty well, centered in the chute, and there really wasn't any reason for Pedrero not to buck him. And the judge would've given him three warnings that he was running out of time.
Round 4, Thursday at 9 est. Just my luck, right during Supernatural, so I'll have to record it and catch up on Friday before Round 5.
The Australian rep, Ben Keliher's up now. He's 0-2. Make that 0-3, he's off in 3.9 and gets nailed pretty hard by the bull before the bullfighters can get to him. Wow. Apparently Keliher's coming back from a broken neck earlier in the year. These guys are nut.
Dustin Hall gets the first qualified ride of the round - he's now 2 for 3.
One of the top Classic bulls, Troubadour, proves why he's ranked so high with a buckoff of Tyler Pankewitz and a 46.25 score.
Hmm. Interesting trivia question - who's the youngest rider to win the finals? I'll have to keep my eyes out fo rhte answer to that one.
Steven Shelley looked like he was gonna have it, but went off at 5.7. He's now 0-3. Ah, there's Joe Baumgartner. Hadn't seen him yet this evening, but he's there.
Luke Snyder and his consecutive event streak. Sadly, he's 0-2 so far. Make that 0-3, as he goes off on basically the bull's first buck, in 1.4. Excellent bull score, though. The bull just kinda pulled him straight down.
Ouch! Silvanei Dias goes off nearly as fast, rather messily, and the bull stops and eyes Shorty before finally opting to wander back to the pens. The medical staff looks to be having to use a certain amount of pantomime to figure out where he hurts - not sure if it's because of his English or if it's just loud in there.
Bulls 10, Cowboys 1. This is shaping up to be another rough night, at least so far, and this isn't even the rank pens anymore.
Ned Cross vs Dr Proctor. Dr Procter wins in 4.4 and somewhat halfheartedly chases Joe Baumgartner - halfheartedly because the bull didn't look to be running all that hard.
Ross Coleman vs El Presidente, same bull Marchi had in Round 1, and Ross gets a ride! First ride of the weekend! 83.25, so not a big score, but a score is a score, and hopefully that'll help him do better net weekend.
Bah. I'd rewound to the beginning, since I missed the first few minutes because of watching the end of the NASCAR race, and now I've caught up to live. I have to watch commercials again, at least until I find something that merits rewinding, in which case I'll get a few more commercial-free minutes. And yes, technically I could watch this later when it's already aired, or mostly aired, and I don't have to worry about commercials, but where's the fun in that?
Clayton Williams asked for something ot be said on TV that will give him better luck. They haven't found anything that will give him luck, because he went off quickly.
Nice! Scott Schiffner gets a ride, and nearly gets squished on the way down, but a good score - 88. He's had a long buckoff streak, I think. Only the third qualified ride of the evening, and enough to take the lead in the round.
Ednei Caminhas, off at 7.0. One good correction, but just couldn't finish.
LJ Jenkins is up now. And apparently we get the answer to the trivia question - LJ Jenkins in 2006, at 19. Whoa! Nice ride! Think that might be his first qualified ride of the weekend, and it was a good one - 88 points.
Travis Briscoe off quickly, and the bull makes an effort at eating Shorty, who fortunately managed to evade. Briscoe's now 2-3.
Returning to the trivia question briefly - these guys make me feel old. It's strange! It's like Kyle Busch, in NASCAR - it's just strange that these guys are huge stars at the professional level, and they're younger than me. I'm only 23, it's not like I'm that old!
Hey, they're talking to Justin. *giggle* "I promised Justin when I got him to come over here that I wouldn't talk about bull #1 or bull #2 ..." "You were lying!" Hehehe. I like Justin. Between the interviews in Rank, and some of his interviews this year, I get the impression that he's very entertaining.
Austin Meier's up. and down, in 3.5. He's one that's easy to spot - there's only two guys sponsored by the Army, and Mike Lee's pretty small and slim, and Meier's pretty big, so it's easy to tell them apart.
Shit! Billy Robinson had a good ride and a lousy dismount, and the bull stepped on his face mask. And he's riding iwth a broken jaw. Actually, I htink he got his arm stepped on, but he did get hit in the face by the bull's head, so that can't feel good.
Agnaldo Cardozo off in 1.8 - he's 0-3.
McKennon Wimberly, another 0-2. Of course, he had the bad luck of drawing a BotY contender last night. Aww! So close! Called for a touch at 7.7. Went off over the bull's head, too, but fortunately the bullfighters' "Look! A distraction!" efforts kept the bull eyeing Shorty and not chasing Wimberly.
The Brazilian rep just got his first ride of the weekend, and a good one - 88.5. I can neither pronounce or spell the guy's name, so I'll try to record it once they put it up again. Joao Kugel. Interesting one. I find it vaguely amusing that there's a Brazilian rep when there's 8 other Brazilians who are actually qualified for the top 45. It's not quite so odd for the others - there's only 1 Canadian, I think, 3 Australians, and I don't think there's another Mexican since I'm not sure Rocky McDonald qualified.
Brendon! And he rides! There's a point for me in the guesses, and his first ride of the weekend! I love his accent. I'm shallow, I know, but it's very pretty.
Colby Yates gets a great ride - that'll be a high score. Yup, 89. And tied for the round lead, and his first ride.
Ack! Cole Taylor has a rough ride! Took flight over the bull's shoulders, and bloodied his nose. Fortunately the bull didn't seem inclined to go after him, because he went off right over the bull's head and would've been in prime territory for the bull to go for him.
Dustin Elliott looked like he just got hung up briefly on the buckoff, but fortunately it was very brief and he got loose quickly.
Now on to Valdiron de Oliveira. Bull was uncooperative in the chutes, but he got the ride. An 85.25 - not huge, but certainly respectable, and it's his first ride of the weekend.
Mike White makes a hell of a ride! That bull looked like he was jerking him all over the place, but he hung on for an 87. Also his first ride.
Tony Mendes, 0-2 so far. And ... he gets it! Nice ride. *giggle* He looked very goofy doing an open-mouthed grin with his mouthguard still in. He looked toothless.
Chris Shivers vs Evil Forces. He went off in 7.9 and got nailed by the bull - he looks really dazed. Landed on his head, actually, and got hit by the bull, and Darrell Diefenbach couldn't get between him and the bull in time. Shivers has challenged it, of course, but the decision is upheld. I'm now 2-2 on the picks tonight.
Harve Stewart's up now, and off in 5. He's now 0-3, I think.
Hehe. I'm tied with Ty Murray and Justin McKee in the Battle for the Buckle thing, which amuses me.
Jared Farley just went off at 4 seconds. He's 0-3 and clearly not happy.
*blinks* They're doing weird things with the order, apparently, because Guilherme Marchi is up now, and I know we're not close to the end of the order. But he's the Ride with the Best tonight, by virtue of winning the round last night, and of course if he gets another ride it could give him a big boost on Justin and JB. Interesting, apparently the Brazilian's use different ropes. And wow, Marchi is the first to go 3-3. That was a good ride - not the best bull, so he won't get a high score, but this could be huge if Justin and/or JB don't ride. He gets an 86 and takes over the event lead because of riding 3-3. Wow. He's ridden 20 of his last 25. And now we have a while before JB and Justin, I think.
I don't understand their ordering, really - I can tell it's either points standings or money standings for the most part, but sometimes guys go out of order for no apparent reason. It confuses me.
Hey, the profile of the evening is Justin! Cool. I already knew he sings, and plays guitar, thanks to Rank, but he's pretty good. His little girl is just adorable. Aww. Talking about how much he loves being a father, which is just cute.
*blink* There's been talk of Justin retiring?! Ack! No! I know he'll have to miss a lot of next season, if he has surgery on his shoulder, but ... this is a hazard, I expect, of finding a sport where the oldest guy around is 37 and the best are mostly under 30. I got spoiled by NASCAR, where Ricky Rudd is racing with guys who weren't even born yet when he started racing Cup. *thinks* It's probably a sign that JW Hart is only 32 and is already in rough enough physical shape from injuries that he's taking a year off to recover.
And hey, back from intermission! Whoa, Jason Bennett goes off on the first buck, and the bull seems to like eating bullfighters, cause he chased both Darrell and Frank.
Beau Hill's up - he's 2-2, and up against Windtwister, and goes off in 4.4. Bah! I think that's the bull that stomped on Justin earlier.
Bah! Mike Lee loses his rope and goes off at 5.7. Looked like he hit the ground pretty hard, too. He's now 0-3.
Hey, Renato Nunes is up against Encore. I think I picked Renato in this one, so let's see what happens. Ack! Went off at 6.1 and got stepped on but good, he can't make it out of the arena. Got the wind knocked out of him. A couple of the other Brazilians came over to translate, as they always do when one of their own gets hurt. Definitely makes sense that someone who's hurt or been knocked out probably will not have the easiest time speaking in a different language. Renato's being helped out, but he's walking, at least.
Kody Lostroh! And he's got a score! He's probaby about to reclaim the event lead! And there he goes - got an 85.75, so he's got the lead with room to spare. 2nd man to go 3-3 so far.
Adriano Moraes just bucked off really fast. And that bull had been ridden 7 of the last 8 times, too.
Brian Canter goes 2-3! Nice ride! 89.50 score, too! He's got the round lead, too! And moves into 3rd overall.
Kasey Hayes just went off in 4.5, kind of hard. Ouch. 46 bull score. He's 0-3, I think. Or maybe 1-3, I'm honestly not sure.
Wiley Petersen's up now, and he also goes 2-3! Another nice ride - gonna be a solid score. Yup, 87.75.
And now to Sean Willingham, who's 0-2. He's a Battle for the Buckle pick - I think I picked him, on the theory that he's due for a ride. And ... he gets it! Nice! Not much of a score, 80, and a 18.5 bull score, so he'll be offered a reride. Which he'll take. And they're still debating whether the original ride pick will count, or whether the reride will count, so I'll have to see what they decide. Sean looked kind of rough on that ride, so he might not stay on a better bull, but since he did get a ride, that might help his confidence and make it more likely that he will ride. So ... who knows? If they redo their picks, I'll make up my mind, but I'll probably just stick with betting on Sean.
Hey, they're finally showing a Finals commercial other than Ross's - here's Justin's. I've seen the short version of Tater Porter's, which is basically just a picture, but that's the first time I've seen one of the full-length commercials for anyone other than Ross.
*sigh* Between Supernatural and the game against Virginia Tech, I have no chance at being able to watch the next round live. Bah.
And on to Paolo Crimber. He ... has this one! Nice. And he and Flint get to dance, which is always funny. 84, so a reasonable score, but not anywhere near the highest in the round.
Another Brazilian next - Robson Palermo. Man, he looked like he hd that one, then he went off. He's not happy about it, either - he's only 1-3 now.
Interview with Paolo Crimber and his bizarre accent. I'm sorry, but Brazilian mixed in with Texas is just strange-sounding.
Matt Bohon goes off hard at 2.9. Man, that bull was spinning fast. I think Bohon might be 2-3 now, but I'm not sure.
And on to JB Mauney! Ack! He goes off in 5.5. And is obviously really mad at himself, cause he just threw his helmet and kicked a wall a couple times. Bah. He could've been the third guy to ride all three bulls this weekend.
Now, on to Sean Willingham's reride. I'm not sure how they're gonna do the scoring, but ... damn! I thought he had it! Sean went off at 7.4. He's now 0-3.
Time for Justin's ride! *crosses fingers* Man, he really needs to ride this one. *twitches* C'mon ... and the bull doesn't wanna buck. Justin called for him anyway, but the bull is down on his front knees and didn't stand up when the chute opened. And it looks like he's standing up trying to get the bull to stand up. And they're taking Justin's rope off and running in a new bull.
Update about Renato Nunes - they're giving him x-rays, but Tandy Freeman thinks it's probably just a bruise.
They've got the new bull in for Justin, and he's getting reset. And he goes! No!!! He's off in 7.2! Shit!! This is not good!! 0-3!
Dammit. Now, because of the bonus points for finishing position in the finals, Justin's championship is in serious danger. Not. GOOD.
Bah. Okay. Have to hope next weekend goes better. Probably won't be able to watch the entirety of Round 4 until Friday afternoon, sadly.
Hmm. Now I have to figure out what to do with myself. I'm used to events being the end of my evening, but it's only 730.
