Summary: The Federation is at war with the Klingons, and Pavel and Hikaru are swept up in it. They try to do their best by each other, but sometimes their best isn't good enough.

( In the second year of the Klingon War, Hikaru is promoted to Captain and given command of the Excelsior. He doesn’t take Pavel with him. )

Haha, mostly that Pavel would be Hikaru's first officer on the Excelsior, although I also like Pavel being First Officer on the Reliant with Terrell before that. I hadn't worked out how that would work until I read this - of course, Hikaru doesn't trust himself to keep Pavel safe, and of course he realises that it's too important to leave to anyone else... :D

I have so many wartime headcanons, but that is definitely the strongest.

And I think, y'know, if it were anyone else but Kirk, Hikaru would take Pavel. But it is Kirk, who always manages to dig victories out from underneath insurmountable odds, and that makes the Enterprise the safest place in the whole galaxy. So the whole time that Pavel is arguing with Hikaru to take him, Hikaru is just looking at him and thinking, "I would be killing you. If I take you away from here, away from him, I would be killing you, Pavel. Don't make me do that."

Which. Aasdkrh. This fucking fic, oh my god, it's like Hikaru only ever speaks in subtext, that bastard. "I love you, don't you know how much?" That's why I can't take you with me. "You're going to get yourself killed!" You're safe on the Enterprise! You can't leave! I mean, like, FFS. Pavel says all his shit in Russian, which isn't really helping the problem, but Hikaru talks giant fucking loops around the things he really means, which, like, kills me every time ( ... )
