Grandparents

Apr 25, 2009 20:10

Today is my grandfather's eighty-eighth birthday.

I've just spoken to him on the telephone for approximately two and a half hours.

My grandfather is a man who has many, many friends. He knows people wherever we go when we are out and about together, even in towns that are not his own. He talks to everyone. People often think he is in his sixties.

My grandfather is a man who still works, growing plants and selling them to big stores with garden centers. This is his "retirement" by choice.

My grandfather has played a major roll in my life since it began.

I am so, so fortunate to have had the love and care of all four of my grandparents well into my thirties. Now my grandfather is the only grandparent left to me, and I hold him very dear. On his eighty-eighth birthday, I'm so glad I got to talk to him for a while, but I wish I could have been in New Mexico.
