The socks had been a gift from Jim’s mother and Bones wasn’t too sure what that meant beyond maybe she had progressed from that stage where glaring hatefully and threatening dismemberment just about bled into actually tolerating his presence. He wasn’t going to count any chickens until all the eggs were hatched but he was fairly sure that the strange gift of matching socks meant that he been accepted as the significant other. Maybe, at least, he wasn’t going to get killed this Christmas season so he sipped his hot cocoa while Jim watched some Christmas program or another on the screen and every time something funny happened he was wiggling in giggles against the couch and Bones’ side. The heater kept the room warm, the cocoa was almost hot, the flannel pajamas (a Christmas staple at the McCoy house and he refused to give it up) were definitely hot and Jim’s body against his side was heated. The tree was twinkling in the background and Joanna looked like she was finally about knocked out on the floor so Bones curled his arm around Jim’s neck to pull him over and said:

“If you wake her up we’ll never get to bed.”

Jim’s smile faltered just long enough for him to sort out what-meant-what and then he looked down at Joanna sleeping on her arms on the floor instead of kicking her feet in the air. He lifted an eyebrow to that and licked his lips. “Are you going to take her up to bed?”

“In a minute,” Bones whispered back, “unless you wake her up.”

So Jim smiled again and turned to look at the screen again. He tried hard to be quiet, pressed still against Bones’ side with his toes wiggling in their matching gray socks but the very next joke that hit him right had him bursting out into rocking laughter. Bones took another drink of his cocoa as Joanna’s head jerked up and she turned around to look at them and then yawned and laid back down.

“Be quiet, Jim,” she mumbled, “Santa’s coming.”

“Sorry,” Jim said. Then he leaned against Bones heavier and turned his head to kiss him on the cheek. “Put her to bed Santa.” With a promise of all the things he could have if he did. Bones turned his head back and kissed him once before he handed him the cup of cocoa and got up to do just that.
