Didn’t see that one coming

Ever have those mornings where things sorta happen that are completely out of the ordinary? This was one of those.

I got to ride into work with Suz this morning, which was a rare pleasure, I had a discussion with a fellow workmate about bowel movements, which was completely surreal, and then I booted up my computer, did a run through of my favourite haunts, and lo and behold, got the surprize of my day when I read Rude Cactus. Check this out.

I’m speechless. Considering his readership, this was one I never expected. I had to check the link to make sure it wasn’t some other Martin. All I can say is, hand on my heart, thank you very much for choosing my suggestion, Chris. I’m very happy that I could toss a little amusement your way, and I’m floored that you’re actually handing over a prize. That’s just way too cool. Made my Christmas!

So here’s a little little-known history for any of you who care about said tagline. I cannot claim all responsibility for that. See, as most of you know, I’ve been doing a radio show these last 8 years, and the vast majority of that time, I’ve had Selene on as my co-host. One of the many, many ways we amused ourselves (and continue to) is coming up with taglines for the show. So, when Mr. Cactus put up his challenge, I immediately tried to think of all the good ones that we’d come up with over the years. There’s a boatload of them, none of them particularly politically correct, and most with a whole lot of back story that’s way too involved to share here. The one that would go on to win the Great Tagline Smackdown is a variation on one of the ones we came up with years ago. So, for the record, I share my win with Selene. Such things would be impossible without her finely-tuned sense of the absurd, and the way it plays off of my similar weirdnesses.

And as far as Mr. Cactus goes, you’re a regular read of mine, as I suppose is true for many people out there. I don’t comment a lot, but I do enjoy your thoughts. I actually started reading you because I felt a sort of connection, and you give me hope for a guy in his early 30’s, who is scared crapless about the idea of children. There really aren’t a lot of web sites out there that I have found written by guys from the perspective of a new dad. It’s very helpful and hopeful to me to see that parenthood can be done, and done well, even if you’re a little left of normal.
. Someday, I expect I’ll find myself in a similar situation, and I can only hope that I have as much success as you.

Again, thanks, Chris… you made my day!

news, musing
