Operation Glove Compartment Swap

Oct 04, 2010 08:15

Was a success! The previous owner of the MX-5 had left a bottle of touch-up paint in the glove compartment. Of course, it rolled around inside the glove compartment until it spilled, sat in a puddle, and froze solid into the glove compartment. There was no way that bottle was becoming detached from the plastic of the glove compartment ( Read more... )

Nicely done. :)

Hey, I should put that Auto-X on the calendar. Should we do the Saturday session?

I know that Mari has a YFU corn maze event going on this Sunday at 3pm, but Saturday is definitely free. I could do Sunday as well, but I wouldn't be able to race my GTI, if that was the road we took.

Honestly, though, I really want to have race ride-alongs in your RX-7 before you sell it. So, if you wanted to do this Saturday in your RX-7, I think that'd be the sweetest option.

Yeah, let's take the RX7. It can get to be a pretty long day out there at Canterbury, so we should probably pack a cooler with lunch and beverages, in addition to the standard compliment of tools and a couple lawn chairs.

Grenacia bought wrist bands for the Zombie Pub Crawl on Saturday night, so I think I'm probably going to sleep like a baby zombie for most of Sunday. :)

I don't see a start time listed on the MAC website. What time are we supposed to get out there? I'm sure it's early. Are you planning to co-drive with me? I think they have magnetic numbers we can borrow. I know they have helmets.

You should register a number for next season and get a set of magnetic numbers made up. It can be good to register two sets of numbers - I think it's only $1 to do so - and make them anagrams, like 117/711, so you can just swap when running different drivers or classes.

Sounds like a plan. Why don't you go ahead and register here, for MOWOG 7 ( ... )

I'd rather not use painter's tape on my car, but I do have some. Maybe I can come up with something magnetic in the meantime if they get back to me promptly with my number. And I just sent in the registration, too. :)

Wooo, we're on! I'm pumped! Any food allergies that I should have to worry about, for lunch?

It's my understanding that many, many autocrossers use the blue 3M painter's tape for numbers, because it doesn't leave any residue or harm the paint. I think people driving cars to shows use it as well, to protect against chips and what not.

You could always do a test in an inconspicuous area before hand, if you're worried.

I'm sure it will be fine. I should register a number for next year. Want to split a magnet sheet?

Oh, and no, I don't have any food allergies. So glad I don't. I <3 food.

I could be up for that. How big do the numbers have to be, and do they have to be on both sides?

I was going to use 2022 (my derby number), but it does tend to be pretty inefficient when it comes to magnet purchases. If the numbers have to be a certain height, then they'll probably have to be bought singley, and it wouldn't matter.

You need numbers on both sides, along with the class. The class can be in a smaller size relative to the numbers. Each car has a unique number, so they want that to be highly visible. Numbers should be high-contrast. I think we should do black, as that will be contrasty with both red and white. Specs for the numbers should be in the SCCA rules somewhere.

Black would be fine. It's equally contrasty with white, on red. I'm sure we'll get a feel for what size numbers to use, after Saturday.

So, does this mean you're keeping your RX-7 for another year, then?

Also, be sure to remind me to bring my portable compressor with me. You'll want some extra air in your tires for racing. I'm sure they'll have compressors there, but it'll be more convenient if we can just use the power from your cigarette lighter to do it.

That's a good idea. I've been running straight nitrogen in my tires, but that probably doesn't matter as our atmosphere is mostly nitrogen anyhow.

Anything like that, that you think we'll need, we should definitely bring along with us. There's really nothing out at Canterbury. It's a good quarter-mile to the stands, and I'm not even sure we can get in there to use the bathrooms. It's just a big ol' chunk of asphalt and not much else (not even shade).

Which reminds me... something like this is what I was trying to describe to you, for a portable and temporary carport. Of course, it would be better to just build out of wood and fiberglass off the north side of your garage... Something to think about.

Duh! Put 20 on one door and 22 on the other!

If we're hauling tools and chairs and what not, it's probably not going to fit in your RX-7, so we may have to take multiple cars? I'd hate to not drive my MX-5 down, but there's no shame in the GTI, I suppose. Or I could drive your Highlander.

No worries. My rx7 is surprisingly capacious. We can totally get my tool box, a cooler and a couple chairs in the back, no problem. I've fit more than that in there before.

Damn! That sounds like a two-corpse trunk to me! Not bad for a zippy sports car.

In high school, I once fit seven people into my FB Rx7. I think that was a record. Good thing they were all friendly. :)
